To set app time limits for a child on iOS 27 or later, open Settings > Family > [child’s name] > Time Allowances > Add. Choose the categories and amount of time, then use Match Screen Time Schedule if the allowances should apply only during selected parts of the day. Always Allowed lets you keep essential apps and contacts available when other apps pause.
Before you begin: check the iOS version
Apple’s instructions for Time Allowances require iOS 27 or later. For a child in a Family Sharing group, Apple says all family devices must be upgraded to the applicable version 27 or later. If the setting is missing, check the software version on each family device and review parental controls after upgrading. Apple also documents redesigned parental controls on iPadOS 27 and macOS 27, but interfaces and capabilities are not necessarily identical across platforms. Apple Support describes the feature and its version requirements.
Set a Time Allowance for your child’s apps
- On the parent’s iPhone or iPad, open Settings.
- Tap Family, then tap the child’s name.
- Tap Time Allowances, then tap Add.
- Follow the onscreen instructions. Adjust the time for a category with the slider or plus and minus buttons.
In the Time Allowances screen, you can also set a total device allowance, add allowances for apps that are not assigned to a category, and select a schedule name to view or edit the allowances associated with it. The controls are designed around categories rather than a separate limit for every app; Apple says you can add categories or change which apps belong to them.

Time Allowances can cover categories such as Entertainment, Games and Social Media. Apple says it may assign apps based on their App Store category and social-media capabilities. If a developer has linked an app to a matching website, the allowance also applies to time spent on that website.

For Child Accounts, Apple provides age-based starting points for allowances shared across categories and for individual categories. These are adjustable starting points, not a universal prescription. A child can use apps until reaching either the allowance for a category or the shared allowance, and can request more time.
Make allowances follow a school or home schedule
Allowances control how much time is available; schedules control when app categories are available. You can use them together by turning on Match Screen Time Schedule in Time Allowances.

- Open Settings > Family > [child’s name] > Screen Time Schedule.
- Turn on Schedule, then tap Add Schedule.
- Choose the days and add a time window with its name, time and permitted app categories.
Apple includes examples such as Before School, School and After School. Custom windows can accommodate routines such as activities or shortened school days. Select a schedule name in Time Allowances when you want to inspect or edit the allowances associated with that schedule.

In the child’s Family settings, tap Always Allowed to manage exceptions. Apple says FaceTime, Maps, Phone and Messages are available by default. You can add apps, people or specific contacts, and remove them later. Selected access remains available when other apps are paused after an allowance is reached.

Pause use or allow unlimited time temporarily
The child’s Family settings also provide quick actions to pause device use, allow unlimited time or change the schedule. Apple says most apps and notifications are blocked while the device is paused. Unlimited-use time does not count toward the child’s Time Allowance.

Apple’s age-based guidance is informed by expert research and tailored to age. Its guidance suggests considering the child, the content, emotional regulation, what screen use may crowd out and communication. Apple Support says, “Research and expert guidance generally suggest that consistent management of screen time, especially as children get older, matters more than a single number.” The guidance does not establish one daily allowance that fits every child, and it is not individualized clinical advice.

- Consider which activities app use might displace, including sleep, schoolwork, play and family time.
- Use categories and schedule windows that reflect your child’s actual routine, then adjust them as that routine changes.
- Discuss the limits and how to request more time so the child understands what happens when an allowance is reached.

Apple documents the setup paths and behavior in its Time Allowances and Screen Time guidance. Labels and available options can depend on the device, account state and software version.
