There is no single length at which every Ethernet cable automatically drops to a slower speed. For common twisted-pair copper Ethernet, 100 m (328 ft) is a typical maximum channel reach, but the supported distance depends on the Ethernet speed, cable category, connected ports, and installation quality. For example, 10GBASE-T is specified for up to 55 m on Cat6 and up to 100 m on Cat6A.
How cable length affects Ethernet speed
Ethernet does not have one universal distance at which a cable switches to a lower speed. A link’s supported reach depends on the Ethernet type and cable category, and the connected ports must also support the intended rate. A run that exceeds its designed reach may have performance or connection problems, but it is not safe to assume that every overlength run will negotiate at one particular slower speed.
Cisco says 802.3 channel requirements typically limit reach to 100 m, while noting that other factors can shorten it. That 100 m figure is a channel reach guideline, not a guarantee for every installation. Count the complete channel, including patch cables where applicable to the equipment guidance.
Documented reach by speed and cable category
The figures below come from Cisco’s Catalyst 3650 guidance for 100 Mbps through 5 Gbps and its Catalyst 9200 guidance for 10GBASE-T. They describe documented reach for those cited guides, not a promise for every device or installation.

What to use for a long run
For 10 Gbps over more than 55 m
If you need 10 Gbps across a copper channel longer than 55 m and up to 100 m, Cisco’s cited guidance specifies Cat6A. The cable alone cannot ensure a 10 Gbps link: both connected ports must support that rate, and the channel must be installed and terminated appropriately.
For 2.5 or 5 Gbps
The cited Catalyst 3650 guide lists up to 100 m for 2.5 Gbps on Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat6A. For 5 Gbps, it lists up to 70 m on Cat5e and up to 100 m on Cat6 or Cat6A. Check the documentation for your own equipment before applying these figures to a different setup.

- Cat 8 Speed, Cat 5/5e Value Enjoy Cat 8 Ethernet cable performance at a Cat 5/5e-level value. With up to 40Gbps speed and 2000MHz bandwidth, this high speed internet cable delivers more bandwidth than standard Cat 5 and Cat 5e cables, helping support smooth gaming, streaming, video calls, large file transfers and everyday wired network use.
- 40Gbps Speed, Wide Compatibility This Cat 8 Ethernet cable supports up to 40Gbps data transfer and 2000MHz bandwidth for fast, reliable internet performance. Standard RJ45 connectors are backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6, Cat6a and Cat5e devices, including routers, modems, switches, gaming PCs, PS5, PS4, Xbox, smart TVs, laptops and printers.
- Stable U/FTP Shielding Each of the 4 twisted pairs is individually wrapped with aluminum foil to help reduce crosstalk, noise, and signal interference. Combined with RJ45 connectors on both ends, the U/FTP design helps maintain cleaner signal transmission for a stable and reliable wired network connection.
- Nylon Braided Durability The nylon braided jacket adds everyday durability while keeping the cable flexible and easy to route. Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
Why a cable may fall short of its documented reach
Length is only one factor. Cisco notes that installation conditions can shorten the typical reach. In particular, cable bundling and termination quality can affect performance. Cable condition and the total channel length matter when diagnosing a run, too.

- 🔌【Higher Speed】Cat 8 Shielded Ethernet Cable provides performance of up to 40000 Mbps (or to 40 Gigabit per second); High bandwidth of up to 2000 MHz, high-speed data transfer for server applications, cloud storage, online HD video streaming, and gaming without any lag or stop. With Orbram Cat8 ultra-fast patch cord, you won't worry about waste time for waiting.
- 🔌【Anti-Interference Design】Orbram professional network cables are made of 4 shielded foiled twisted pair(S/FTP) copper wires with 24K gold-plated RJ45 connectors on each end. Compared to the Cat 7 network Ethernet cable, the additional shielding and improved quality in twisting of the wires provides better protection from crosstalk, noise, and interference that can degrade the signal quality. This will increase the reliability and accuracy of the data transfer.
- 🔌【More Convenient】Cat 8 rj45 cables are in flat design to avoid tangled cords and save space. Flat Lan cable is super flexible to make it easier to hide or run along any surface. You can easily and immediately install the cable run along walls, follow edges or corners when you receive the durable gigabit ethernet cable.

Provides universal connectivity for Televisions, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Switches, Routers Modems, PS3, PS4, Computer, Laptop, Printers, Network Printers, Network Attached Storage Device and other networking equipment.
- 🔌【Incredible Durable】 Double braided nylon exterior make Cat8 Ethernet Cable more durable, flexible and tangle-free. And this sturdy cat 8 patch cord can be bended at least 10 thousands times, so that you can reuse it without any concerns.
Check a slower-than-expected connection
- Check the negotiated link rate. Look at the network adapter or switch status to confirm the speed the connected ports have established; the cable category by itself does not show the negotiated rate.
- Confirm port capability. Verify that both ends support the speed you expect. A faster-rated cable cannot make a port support a higher link rate.
- Measure the full channel. Include the installed run and patch cables where applicable, then compare the result with the relevant speed-and-category guidance.
- Inspect the cable path and terminations. Look for poor connector or termination quality, heavy bundling, or a damaged cable.
- Test the run if the cause remains unclear. An Ethernet cable tester can help identify wiring faults; a certification tester can assess whether an installed channel meets its relevant performance requirements.
