Background app activity, location access, and Mail’s data-fetching schedule can all use battery, but they are not automatically the biggest drain on every iPhone. Start with Settings > Battery to see which apps and system activity are using power on your device; then change only the settings that match what you find.
How to find what is using your iPhone battery

Open Settings > Battery. Review Daily Usage and App and System Activity, comparing today with recent days when those views are available. Apple’s battery troubleshooting guide and iPhone Battery guide describe these views.

Tap an app with unusually high use. Look at its on-screen and background activity, and consider whether notifications or weak cellular coverage may also help explain the pattern.

Make a targeted change to the app or feature implicated by the Battery screen. Check Battery again later before changing other settings, so you can tell whether the adjustment made a difference.

If usage remains unusually high, check Battery Health. Apple advises considering service if Battery Health displays Service; the menu path varies by iPhone generation. See Apple’s battery troubleshooting guidance.
1. Background App Refresh and other background activity
Background App Refresh is a setting; background activity is a broader Battery report. An app may do work while it is not onscreen even when that work is not simply a Background App Refresh update. Apple lists directions, music playback, photo syncing, and mail fetching as examples of background activity. The Battery screen’s background duration can help explain an app’s higher-than-usual use, but the amount depends on what the app is doing.
What to check
In Settings > Battery, tap an app with substantial background time and consider whether its activity makes sense. For example, navigation may need to continue providing directions when the screen is off, while another app may not need frequent background updates.

What to change
Review Background App Refresh selectively in Settings and limit it for apps that do not need to update when you are not using them. Keep it available for apps whose background updates are useful. Apple does not provide a fixed battery-savings percentage for turning it off, so judge the result using your own Battery screen. Apple’s battery guide also notes that Low Power Mode reduces or disables Background App Refresh.
2. Location access while apps are in the background
An app with location permission may use location when it is not open, depending on the access you granted and the app’s function. That can be necessary for features such as ongoing directions or location-based reminders; it is not a reason to turn off Location Services for every app. Apple warns that disabling Location Services can limit or stop important iPhone features.
Choose the least access that works

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.

Tap an app whose access you want to review. Choose a permission level that still supports the app’s purpose, such as access only while using it where that is sufficient.

If the app does not need your exact position, turn off Precise Location so it can use an approximate location instead.
Apple explains how to control which apps can use Location Services and how location sharing and background access work. Check the app’s behavior after changing access; restricting location may affect reminders or other features that rely on it.

3. Mail Fetch and background email checks
Mail’s Fetch New Data setting controls how the device receives messages, and the available behavior depends on the email service and whether it supports Push. Apple’s current path is Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts > Fetch New Data.
Choose a schedule that fits how quickly you need mail
You can select a less frequent fetch schedule or Manual if delayed delivery is acceptable. Manual means mail is checked when you open or refresh Mail, rather than arriving on a background schedule. On iOS 11 and later, the Automatically option fetches in the background only while the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi. Do not assume Push always uses more or less battery than Fetch: Apple’s instructions describe availability and behavior, not a comparative battery cost. Read Apple’s Fetch New Data instructions before changing an account-dependent option.

Low Power Mode reduces or disables several features to extend battery life, including Mail fetch and Background App Refresh. It is a broad, temporary tradeoff rather than a diagnosis of which app is responsible.

iPhone 15 and later: go to Settings > Battery > Power Mode.

Older iPhone models: go to Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode.
Apple documents these controls in its battery guide. Adaptive Power is also available on selected newer devices; check Apple’s Adaptive Power availability and settings for your iPhone model rather than assuming the option is present.
When settings are not the whole explanation
Rechargeable batteries have a limited lifespan, so a battery’s condition can affect how long the iPhone lasts between charges. Check Battery Health in Settings; the location of that screen depends on the iPhone generation. If it shows Service, follow Apple’s service guidance rather than expecting app-setting changes to resolve a battery-condition issue. See Apple’s battery troubleshooting guide.
