For Patrick Campanale, replacing his decade-old Lenovo Xeon server with UGREEN NAS hardware sharply reduced reported power use—but it was not a like-for-like upgrade. His 12-bay server gave way to NAS hardware with fewer bays and different expansion options. The comparison is useful as a personal example, not proof that every UGREEN NAS will outperform or cost less to run than every Xeon server.
What Campanale replaced—and what he moved to
Campanale’s former primary NAS was a used Lenovo ThinkSystem RD440 that he bought for a little over $300. It had 12 drive bays, two roughly decade-old Xeon processors with 12 cores and 24 threads combined, and 64GB of DDR3 ECC memory. He used it for nearly six years. In June 2026, he said he had moved to UGREEN NAS hardware.
The exact UGREEN model used for the reported power comparison is not clear in the source account. Campanale separately said that the four-bay UGREEN NASync DXP4800 GT he reviewed earlier in 2026 outperformed the old server, while noting that it had fewer bays. He also said he had access to the iDX6011 Pro. Those references do not establish which specific unit produced the 40–45W figure, so it should not be attributed to the DXP4800 GT as a measured replacement.
How much power did the old server use?
Campanale reports that his RD440 drew about 200–300W at the wall, compared with about 40–45W for the UGREEN system. He estimated that the difference saved him more than $220 a year in electricity. Those are figures from his setup and usage, not a controlled same-workload test or a universal estimate. The annual dollar saving depends on the devices’ actual draw, how long they run, and the local electricity rate.

To estimate your own running-cost difference, measure both systems at the wall under representative conditions. A plug-in power meter can help capture an always-on system’s draw; include periods of normal drive access and idle or hibernation if those occur in your use. For a simple annual estimate, multiply the average wattage difference by hours of operation per year, divide by 1,000 to get kilowatt-hours, then multiply by your electricity price per kilowatt-hour.
Why NAS power figures are not directly interchangeable
UGREEN publishes separate low-power figures for its two-bay DH2300: 13.72W during drive access and 3.304W during drive hibernation. The company says those figures came from its lab using a Seagate 2TB hard drive and cautions that actual consumption varies with the drives, network activity, background tasks, cooling, and settings. They are not measurements of Campanale’s UGREEN system, and they should not be used as a stand-in for the 40–45W he reports.

Power comparisons are meaningful only when the conditions are clear. The server and NAS may have different numbers and types of drives, workloads, network links, and background services. A low hibernation figure also does not describe a system that is actively serving files or running applications.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat the move gave up: bays and flexibility
The RD440’s 12 bays were a genuine advantage for someone with many drives or a mixed-drive storage layout. A smaller NAS can use less power, but it may force a user to replace disks with larger ones, add separate storage, or rethink how capacity is arranged. The DXP4800 GT reviewed by TechRadar has four SATA bays and two Gen3 x2 M.2 NVMe slots; its listed maximum of 144TB combines SATA and NVMe capacity. That is a different storage layout from a 12-bay server, not a direct substitute for every drive-heavy setup.

UGREEN models also differ substantially from one another:
| Model | Drive and network details | Relevant trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| NASync DH2300 | Two SATA bays, 1GbE, RAID 0/1, and up to 64TB raw capacity with two 32TB drives, according to UGREEN | Compact, basic storage configuration; not equivalent to the four-bay DXP4800 GT or a 12-bay server |
| NASync DH4300 Plus | Four bays, 8GB soldered memory, 2.5GbE, and up to 128TB raw capacity, according to Android Central’s review | No M.2 storage; the reviewer notes it lacks Plex hardware transcoding |
| NASync DXP4800 GT | Four SATA bays, two M.2 NVMe slots, dual 10GbE; TechRadar lists up to 144TB combined capacity | More expansion and faster networking options than the DH2300, but still four SATA bays rather than 12 |
These figures describe different models and published specifications, not equivalent tested configurations. Capacity ceilings are not a promise of included storage: the DH2300 is diskless, and other NAS enclosures may also require separate drives. Check the exact model’s drive compatibility and whether its stated capacity is raw or configured usable space before planning a migration.

Would a NAS be faster for your workload?
“Outperformed” depends on the task. File transfers, container workloads, media processing, and other server duties stress different parts of a system. A NAS can be a better fit for straightforward storage while being a poor replacement for a server application that depends on a particular operating system, processor architecture, expansion card, or software stack. Campanale’s experience supports his own workload; it does not establish that a NAS will beat all Xeon systems.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →TechRadar measured the DXP4800 GT at 272.96MB/s read and 268.35MB/s write on its 2.5GbE network. The reviewer reported higher speeds after adding 10GbE networking. Those are reviewer results for that NAS and network setup, not a head-to-head benchmark against Campanale’s RD440. To benefit from 10GbE, the NAS alone is not enough: the rest of the path must support it too. TechRadar’s faster test used a 10GbE switch and a USB4-to-10GbE adapter.

Compare the full cost, not just the enclosure
Campanale’s used server cost a little over $300, but that one-time purchase price does not settle which option is cheaper overall. A NAS setup may require drives, and faster networking can add equipment costs. Electricity savings accumulate over time, but the amount depends on your measurements and power rate. A fair comparison includes the hardware you must buy or replace, storage capacity, network upgrades, and ongoing electricity use.
- Include storage: compare the drives you already own with the drives needed to reach equivalent usable capacity in the NAS.
- Include networking: a 10GbE port only improves transfers when the client, adapters, cabling, and network equipment can use that speed.
- Include applications: confirm that the NAS supports the services you rely on before retiring a general-purpose server.
- Include operating cost: use your measured draw and electricity rate rather than applying Campanale’s annual estimate to your own home.
Which option makes sense?
Choose a NAS when
- Your main need is centralized file storage and the NAS has enough bays and capacity for your drives.
- You want a purpose-built appliance and have confirmed that it supports your essential applications.
- Measured power use and the expected electricity savings justify the enclosure and any new disks or network equipment.
Keep or replace the server when
- You need many drive bays, PCIe expansion, or server software that the NAS cannot run.
- Your existing server’s capacity or flexibility matters more than a smaller footprint or lower measured draw.
- The total cost of a NAS, replacement drives, and network upgrades outweighs the savings for your usage.
For an owner considering a similar move, the most useful first step is to list the server’s actual jobs and storage layout, then measure its power at the wall. Compare those requirements with a specific NAS model—not with the general label “UGREEN NAS”—and account for the storage and network equipment the change would require.
