If Chrome’s translation prompt is missing, open the page and try More > Translate. If that command is unavailable or does not work, refresh the page, then check the translation settings for your device. Google notes that a language may not be available for translation.
Try Chrome’s manual Translate command
- Open the page you want to translate in Chrome.
- Tap More beside the address bar, then tap Translate.
- If translation does not work, refresh the page and try again. Google Chrome Help says, “If you still can’t tap Translate, the language might not be available for translation.” See Google’s Android translation instructions or its iPhone and iPad instructions.
Menu labels and layout may change as Chrome is updated. Follow the path for your device; Android and iPhone or iPad use different translation controls.
Fix translation settings on Android
Turn on translation offers
- Tap More > Settings > Languages.
- Under Translation settings, turn on Offer to send pages in other languages to Google Translate.
Check the target language and translation lists
- To choose the language Chrome translates into, go to More > Settings > Languages > Advanced > Translate into this language.
- In Don’t offer to translate these languages, check whether the page’s language is listed; remove or adjust it if you want Chrome to offer translation.
- Review Automatically translate these languages and adjust its entries if needed.
Chrome’s app display language and the language used as the translation target are separate settings. Changing the app language does not itself choose the language for translated pages.

Fix translation settings on iPhone or iPad
Enable page translation
- Tap More > Settings > Languages.
- Make sure Translate pages is on.
Review language choices
- In Languages, add a language or select Offer to translate for a language you want Chrome to offer.
- If you previously chose Never translate, undo that choice for the language.
- To translate a language automatically, display a translated page and choose Always translate [language].
What to check if the prompt still does not appear
- The manual command: Try More > Translate rather than waiting for a prompt at the top of the page.
- The offer setting: Check the platform-specific control above to make sure Chrome is allowed to offer translation.
- The page language: Refresh the page. If Translate remains unavailable, Google says the language might not be available for translation.
- Language preferences: Check whether the language is excluded from offers or whether an automatic-translation preference is affecting what Chrome does.
Google’s guidance does not identify one universal cause for a missing prompt or establish a particular Chrome version, operating-system version, or device model as the cause. A settings change may help, but it cannot guarantee that Chrome will offer translation for every page or language.
