ESP32 dual-core architecture lets eligible tasks run concurrently on two cores under ESP-IDF’s SMP-capable FreeRTOS. It does not mean every task runs at once or that an application automatically gets twice the performance: task priority, readiness, time slicing, and core affinity determine how CPU time is assigned.
How the ESP32’s two cores work together
Espressif describes ESP-IDF FreeRTOS as a modified FreeRTOS implementation with symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) capabilities. In SMP, multiple cores share memory and are managed by one operating system implementation. When work is ready and eligible, the scheduler can run tasks on both cores at the same time.
That is concurrent execution, not a promise that every task is simultaneous, uninterrupted, or permanently assigned to one core. The scheduler decides what can run based on task state, priority, and placement constraints.

How ESP-IDF FreeRTOS schedules tasks
Priority and preemption
Each task has a priority. A higher-priority ready task can preempt a lower-priority task, so urgent work can take precedence when it becomes runnable.

Time slicing
When multiple ready tasks share a priority, time slicing shares execution among them. Under SMP, each core makes scheduling decisions and considers which tasks are eligible to run on that core. Espressif notes that its scheduler supports fixed priority, preemption, and time slicing, with some behavioral differences from vanilla FreeRTOS. Espressif’s ESP-IDF v5.2 FreeRTOS documentation describes these behaviors.
Choose whether a task may move between cores
Task affinity determines where a task is allowed to run. A task pinned to a core is restricted to that core; an unpinned task may move between cores. Pinning is useful when an application has a specific reason to constrain placement, but it is not a universal performance optimization. The documentation defines affinity, but does not establish that a particular arrangement makes an IoT application faster or more reliable.

- Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2: Connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks or use Bluetooth Classic and BLE for wireless sensors, smart devices, remote controls, home automation and other connected projects
- Flexible Power-Saving Modes: ESP32 power-management features support dynamic clock scaling and low-power operating modes, helping developers reduce energy use in compatible sensing, monitoring and connected-device applications, suitable for battery-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
- USB-C Programming with CP2102: Connect through USB-C for power, sketch uploads and serial monitoring, while GPIO, UART, SPI and I2C interfaces support sensors, displays, motor drivers and other modules (USB-C cable not included)
- Over-the-Air Update Support: Configure OTA functionality through a compatible ESP-32 software framework to update deployed firmware over Wi-Fi without reconnecting the board by USB for every revision
- Pinned task: runs only on its assigned core.
- Unpinned task: may run on either eligible core and can switch between them.
Dual-core capability depends on the target and build
The ESP-IDF v5.2 documentation discusses ESP32, ESP32-S3, and ESP32-P4 targets, but their capabilities should not be treated as interchangeable. This article concerns the ESP32; check the documentation for the exact chip and ESP-IDF version used in a project.
ESP-IDF FreeRTOS can also be built in single-core mode. The architecture’s dual-core capability therefore does not by itself prove that a particular build or ESP-family target is using two cores.

What dual-core multitasking does—and does not—promise
- It makes concurrent task execution possible when tasks are ready and eligible for different cores.
- Priority and preemption influence which ready work runs.
- Time slicing shares execution among ready tasks at the same priority.
- Affinity can restrict a task to one core or allow it to move between cores.
- It does not guarantee that all tasks run simultaneously, that a task gets uninterrupted CPU time, or that performance doubles.
