A 100KB image can look crisp while a 1MB image looks blurry because file size measures encoded bytes, not visible detail. Sharpness depends on what the encoder preserved, the image’s pixel dimensions and content, and the size at which it is displayed.

What file size does—and doesn’t—tell you

A larger file can contain more image information, but bytes alone cannot tell you how much useful detail survived encoding. Format, compression mode, encoder choices, and image content all affect how those bytes are used. Google explains that WebP, for example, uses prediction coding and allocates bits across image regions; different encoding choices can produce different visual results from similarly sized files. Google’s WebP compression documentation describes these techniques.

So the 100KB-versus-1MB comparison is not a quality ranking. A compact image may look sharp at its intended display size because its encoder used bytes efficiently. A larger image may still look poor if it has too few pixels for the display, contains compression damage, or is enlarged beyond its source dimensions.

Why some images look good at smaller file sizes

Encoding can preserve important detail efficiently

Lossy compression reduces file size by discarding or approximating some information. Encoders differ in how they represent image regions and balance detail against bytes. Google’s description of WebP covers prediction, quantization, filtering, and adaptive bit allocation—techniques that help explain why one encoding can retain visually important edges or texture using fewer bytes than another. That is not a guarantee that WebP will always look better than JPEG: the source image and encoding settings matter.

Some image content compresses more gracefully

Smooth areas in a photograph may hide compression changes that would be obvious in fine text or sharp-edged artwork. Lossy compression can be less forgiving on line art, text, and crisp edges than on other content, as web.dev’s image performance guidance explains. A file can therefore look acceptable as a photograph but show blur, halos, or blockiness when it contains lettering or diagrams.

Display size changes what you notice

Pixel dimensions determine how much source detail an image has. If an image is enlarged beyond those dimensions, scaling cannot recreate detail that was never captured. High-density screens can also make a low-resolution image appear soft. Apple’s image delivery guidance discusses supplying appropriately sized, high-resolution images for Retina displays.

Why a 1MB image can still look bad

  • It has too few pixels for the rendered size. A large byte count does not guarantee adequate width and height. Enlarging a small source makes it look soft rather than adding detail.
  • Compression artifacts are already present. More bytes in a later export do not reliably restore details discarded by an earlier lossy encode. Re-encoding a degraded image can preserve or worsen visible defects rather than recover the original.
  • The content exposes the defects. Text, diagrams, and sharp-edged graphics can make blur, ringing, or block artifacts conspicuous, even when the file is relatively large.
  • The comparison is unfair. Comparing different zoom levels, display sizes, or thumbnails can make one version seem sharper for reasons unrelated to its encoding. Judge both at the same intended size and on the same display.

Formats and quality settings are not directly comparable

WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression, as well as transparency and animation, according to RFC 9649. The extension alone therefore does not reveal whether a particular WebP file is lossy or lossless. Lossless compression preserves original pixel values while reducing redundant data, but it does not necessarily produce a smaller file than a lossy export.

Quality settings also do not form a shared scale across formats. Google notes that a WebP file encoded at a higher quality setting can be larger than a JPEG encoded at a lower setting. Compare the resulting image, not the nominal quality number, and consider whether the delivery path supports any needed features such as transparency or animation. See the Google WebP FAQ.

How to compare two images fairly

  1. Use the same source or scene. If you are comparing encodings, start with the same original image so composition and capture differences do not affect the judgment.
  2. Record format and pixel dimensions. Note each file’s format, width, and height, along with file size. Bytes by themselves do not reveal the source resolution or encoding mode.
  3. Match the viewing conditions. Display both images at the same intended size on the same screen. Check ordinary viewing size first, then inspect corresponding details at 100% zoom.
  4. Look for content-specific defects. Check whether texture has vanished, edges are blurred or surrounded by halos, blocks are visible, colors have shifted, or text has become difficult to read.
  5. When exporting alternatives, start from the best original available. Adjust compression settings and compare the actual results. web.dev recommends experimenting with compression levels to find an acceptable balance between quality and size; Google’s format guidance explains why settings from different formats should not be treated as equivalent.
