Recycling an old computer means finding a responsible next use for it: first consider repair, an upgrade, donation, or refurbishment; if it cannot remain useful, send it through an appropriate collection route for materials recovery. Donating a working computer is reuse, not the same thing as dismantling it to recover materials. In either case, remove personal information and check the local program’s requirements before handing the device over.
What counts as recycling an old computer?
In everyday use, “recycling” can describe responsible end-of-use management broadly, including reuse options that keep a computer working. More precisely, reuse and materials recycling are different outcomes: a donated or refurbished device may continue serving someone, while a computer that is dismantled is processed to recover materials such as metals, plastics, and glass.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says donating or recycling electronics can conserve natural resources and help avoid pollution associated with mining and manufacturing materials. It advises people to make sure electronics are donated and recycled safely and correctly. See the EPA’s Electronics Donation and Recycling guidance.
What to do before getting rid of a computer
- Decide whether it can keep being used. Consider repair or a hardware or software upgrade before replacing a computer that can remain useful. If it works, donation or refurbishment may extend its life.
- Remove your personal information. Delete personal data before donating or recycling. Do not assume a collection program has wiped the device simply because it accepts it for recycling. For sensitive information, ask the provider exactly what data-handling service it offers and get the terms in writing.
- Check battery requirements. Some batteries need a separate collection route. The EPA says lithium-ion batteries and devices containing them should not go in household garbage or recycling bins. Ask the local program how it accepts the computer’s battery.
- Confirm what the collection program accepts. Check that it takes your computer type and any accessories you plan to bring, and ask about conditions or fees. Accepted items and options vary by program and location.
How to choose a collection route
Households can check local or community collection facilities, manufacturer or retailer programs, and donation options. EPA’s locator listings are informational; their inclusion does not mean EPA endorses a listed organization. Verify the provider’s terms directly, especially for data handling, batteries, accepted equipment, and fees.

For businesses, government agencies, and large purchasers, EPA recommends using an electronics recycler certified to R2 or e-Stewards. EPA recognizes these as accredited U.S. certification standards. They address environmental, worker-health, and security practices, including downstream handling, reuse and recycling, and destruction of data on used electronics. - Which computer types and accessories it accepts.
- Whether it prioritizes direct reuse, refurbishment, or materials recovery.
- What data-erasure service and documentation it provides.
- How it handles batteries and downstream processing.
- Whether it is certified and what location, convenience, or fee conditions apply.
Why responsible computer recycling matters
Electronics contain valuable materials, and producing them requires resources and energy. EPA reports a U.S. Geological Survey estimate that recycling one million laptops saves the energy equivalent of the electricity used by more than 3,500 U.S. homes in a year. The estimate dates to 2006; it is not a current measurement or a recycling rate.
Collection rules and accepted materials vary by location, so this guidance is not a universal legal definition. Older cathode-ray-tube monitors require particular care: EPA says CRT televisions and computer monitors contain an average of four pounds of lead, a general historical estimate that should not be applied to every computer or modern flat-panel display.
