Humanoids are drawing attention, but most robots already running factories are purpose-built industrial machines. The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) counted 4,664,000 industrial robots in operational use worldwide in 2024, alongside 542,000 new installations that year. By contrast, IFR reported about 7,000 full-size humanoids sold globally in 2025—and says many current humanoid applications remain specialized and often require human teleoperation.
What is already running in factories?
Industrial robots are not a single shape or a synonym for humanoids. IFR’s statistics cover robots across applications, customer industries, robot types, and technical and economic aspects. The important distinction is that this is a mature, measurable base of industrial automation, not a count of human-shaped machines.
IFR reported 4,664,000 industrial robots in operational use worldwide at the end of 2024. That is the estimated working stock, not the number installed during 2024. In that calendar year, factories installed 542,000 industrial robots globally. IFR said this was more than twice the level ten years earlier and the fourth consecutive year with installations above 500,000. Read IFR’s 2025 World Robotics summary.

The difference between stock and installations matters: stock describes robots estimated to be in use at a point in time, while installations measure additions during a year. Neither measure says how many robots are humanoids, how many are fully autonomous, or how many people a robot replaces.

Where are industrial robots concentrated?
Asia accounted for 74% of new industrial robot deployments in 2024, Europe for 16%, and the Americas for 9%, according to IFR. China alone installed 295,000 units, or 54% of the global total, and its operational stock exceeded two million. These are different measures: China’s 295,000 is annual installations; the two-million-plus figure is robots in operation.
For a US comparison, IFR reported 393,700 industrial robots working in US factories in 2024 and 34,200 installations that year. The first is operational stock; the second is new installations. IFR also says the United States imports most robot hardware from Japan and Europe, while domestic system integrators implement automation solutions. See IFR’s US robotics figures.

Why do humanoids draw attention despite the scale gap?
A human-like body suggests that a robot might work in spaces and around equipment designed for people, which helps explain the interest in humanoids. But a familiar form is not proof of broad task flexibility or reliable autonomous production. IFR describes recent humanoid projects as impressive pilots, while noting that current applications remain specialized and often require human teleoperation.

IFR’s current news page reports about 7,000 full-size humanoids—defined there as above 140 cm—sold globally in 2025. This is a sales figure for full-size humanoids, not a count of factory robots in operation or verified autonomous workers. The figure should not be compared directly with industrial operational stock: the populations and measures differ. See IFR’s humanoid coverage.

What the figures do—and do not—show
The contrast is about maturity and evidence, not a contest between two interchangeable machine types. Industrial robots have a large reported operational base and hundreds of thousands of annual installations. The humanoid sales estimate indicates commercial activity, but by itself does not establish sustained factory production, uptime, productivity, or reliability for particular models.
IFR compiles industrial robot data from nearly all suppliers, either directly or through national robotics associations, and estimates operational stock at year-end. Its World Robotics coverage includes roughly 40 countries. The figures are therefore supplier- and association-reported estimates, not a physical census of every factory. IFR explains its definitions and classification.

What might change next?
IFR forecasts 655,000 industrial robot installations worldwide in 2026, rising to 806,000 in 2029. Those are forecasts, not observed outcomes. The federation points to manufacturing relocation, labor shortages, demographic change, AI, machine vision, sensing, easier programming, and system integration as relevant market conditions or capability drivers. They may shape adoption, but do not guarantee a particular level of deployment. IFR’s 2026 outlook.
