To turn on subtitles on Disney+, start playing a show or movie, open the playback settings, and choose a subtitle or closed-caption option. The control is usually at the upper right on web and mobile, and at the lower right on TV-connected devices. Roku and Apple TV use remote gestures instead.
Turn on subtitles while a video is playing
Disney+ lets you change subtitle and audio languages during playback. The menu may show subtitles, captions, or closed captions (CC), depending on the title and device.
Web browser and mobile devices
- Start playing the show or movie.
- Select the keyboard-shaped playback settings control in the upper-right corner.
- Choose a subtitle or caption option and select a language.
- Select the X or back arrow to close the menu and save the choice for the profile.
TV-connected devices
- Start playback and open the playback settings control, usually in the lower-right corner.
- Choose a subtitle or caption option and select a language.
- Close the menu to save the choice.
Some TV-connected devices use a three-dot icon for playback settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRoku
- While the video is playing, press the asterisk (*) button on the Roku remote.
- Open the caption or subtitle option and choose the setting you want.
Apple TV
- While the video is playing, swipe down on the Apple TV remote to open playback options.
- Choose a subtitle or caption option and select a language.
What happens to your subtitle choice next time?
Disney+ saves the last-used subtitle and audio choices for the profile and generally applies them to the next show or movie when that title offers the selected language. To change the choice, open playback settings again while watching.

Why a subtitle language may be missing
Subtitle, caption, and audio options vary by title and country or region, so a language may not be available for the video you are watching. Disney+ suggests changing the profile’s app language to check whether a version in that language is available. This may make another version appear, but it does not guarantee one exists for that title or region; Disney+ may instead use English or another available version. See Disney+ instructions for changing video language and its guidance on video versions.
- Open the profile menu.
- Choose Edit Profiles and select the profile you use.
- Set App Language to the language you want.
- Choose Done, then check the title’s playback settings again.
Disney+ says it is committed to providing English closed captions or subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH) on all titles, while noting rare exceptions and that availability can vary by language. Details are in its closed-captioning guidance.

Fix subtitles that look wrong or do not appear
- Check the Disney+ playback menu to confirm subtitles or captions are enabled and that the intended language is selected.
- Check your device’s accessibility or subtitle-style settings, since they can affect how captions display.
- Try another video to see whether the issue is limited to one title or language option.
- If the problem continues, confirm the device is supported, restart Disney+, and check for app and system updates.
- Disney+ also suggests clearing the app’s cache and data, reinstalling the app, improving the internet connection, power cycling the device, and testing other apps.
More platform-specific accessibility troubleshooting is available in the Disney+ accessibility guide.
