Home Assistant’s software is free, but running a smart home with it may still cost money for an always-on host, compatible devices, protocol radios, electricity, and optional cloud features. The costs that tend to surprise people are not one universal fee: they accumulate as a system grows, and they can include setup and maintenance time that no published figure reliably totals for every household.

Is Home Assistant free?

Yes. Home Assistant says its full software is free and open source, with no subscription required and no features locked behind a paywall. The project identifies hardware, accessories, and optional services as possible costs. Its FAQ puts it simply: “The full software is free, forever.” (Home Assistant FAQ)

That distinction matters: paying for a convenient dedicated hub or hosted features is optional, not a prerequisite for using Home Assistant locally.

What costs can add up?

Build a budget from the parts your household actually needs rather than relying on a single advertised “total cost.” Home Assistant’s official sources do not establish a representative lifetime total, typical device replacement bill, or average owner-maintenance time.

Do you need a Raspberry Pi or Home Assistant Green?

No particular computer is mandatory. Home Assistant needs a device that stays on; its hardware guidance lists Home Assistant Green, Raspberry Pi, mini PC, NUC, and virtual machine as options. Reusing suitable always-on hardware can mean no incremental controller purchase. Home Assistant recommends Green for most people who want a dedicated, straightforward hub. (Home Assistant hardware guidance)

Home Assistant Green

Home Assistant lists Green at a recommended MSRP of $199 in the US and €179 in the euro area (Home Assistant, 2026). The product page says the US amount excludes taxes, the euro amount includes applicable VAT, and local prices vary; these are regional recommended prices, not a guaranteed checkout price. Green’s published power consumption is about 1.7 W idle and about 3 W under load. (Home Assistant Green)

Hardware you already own

A suitable Raspberry Pi, mini PC, NUC, or virtual-machine host can avoid buying a separate hub. The trade-off is that power draw, setup work, and suitability depend on the machine and configuration. The published Green power specification should not be treated as a proxy for another computer’s electricity use.

How much electricity does Home Assistant Green use?

Home Assistant specifies about 1.7 W at idle and about 3 W under load. If Green drew 1.7 W continuously for 8,760 hours, the arithmetic is about 14.9 kWh for that year. That is a calculation from the published idle figure, not an independently measured annual bill or a guarantee of actual household consumption. Multiply actual kilowatt-hours by your own electricity price to estimate cost. (Home Assistant Green specifications)

For another host, measure its average draw if you want a useful estimate. A larger computer may use more or less depending on its hardware, configuration, and workload; there is no representative comparison figure established here.

Will you need a Zigbee, Thread, or other radio?

Only if your device choices require one and you do not already have compatible hardware. Green can use the Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 for Zigbee or Thread devices, but the accessory is not required for every home or device. Check the exact device and current Home Assistant compatibility information before buying a radio.

Do you have to pay for Home Assistant Cloud?

No. Home Assistant says it works fully without its cloud subscription. The paid service adds convenience features such as remote access, Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa integrations, voice processing, and offsite backups. (Home Assistant Cloud)

How much setup and maintenance time should you budget?

Home Assistant’s FAQ estimates about 15 minutes for basic Green setup, then another 30–60 minutes to add initial integrations and a dashboard. A custom installation on a Raspberry Pi, mini PC, or virtual machine is estimated at 1–2 hours. These are published setup estimates, not a promise for every configuration or a measure of total ownership time. (Home Assistant FAQ)

The FAQ says a stable release arrives on the first Wednesday of each month and an automatic backup occurs before each update. That creates regular opportunities to maintain the system; it does not establish a universal number of hours owners spend each year.

How to make a realistic Home Assistant budget

  1. Choose the host. Count an existing suitable always-on computer as $0 incremental hardware cost; otherwise compare Green’s current local price with a self-sourced host.
  2. Inventory planned devices. Write down the endpoints you want and check their compatibility and protocol requirements before buying.
  3. Check existing radios and bridges. Add a Zigbee or Thread device only when your intended setup needs it and you do not already have compatible equipment.
  4. Decide whether hosted features are worth paying for. Keep Cloud/Link out of the budget if local operation is all you need.
  5. Estimate electricity from measured draw. Use average watts × hours ÷ 1,000 × your local price per kWh. Treat Green’s published idle consumption as a reference for Green, not as the exact draw of every installation.
  6. Allow for household-specific upkeep. Configuration, updates, troubleshooting, and replacements can take time or money, but available official figures do not quantify a typical lifetime total.

The hidden-cost effect is mainly cumulative: a controller may be only the first purchase, while additional devices, protocol requirements, and upkeep depend on how far the system grows. A careful inventory and compatibility check are more useful than assuming every household needs the same hub, radio, subscription, or device basket.
