AirPods 5 make active noise cancellation meaningfully more useful than it was on AirPods 4, while delivering richer sound in the reviewer’s listening. That could make them a worthwhile upgrade for AirPods 4 owners who want to keep an open-ear fit. They still do not approach AirPods Pro 3 for near-complete quiet.
How much better is AirPods 5 noise cancellation?
Apple says AirPods 5 remove up to 50 percent more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. That is Apple’s comparative product claim—not an absolute noise-reduction figure or an independent measurement.
In Ed Hardy’s reported use, ANC nearly removed persistent insect noise, but bird calls remained audible. His experience suggests AirPods 5 can reduce some steady background sounds without making the world silent. If near-complete quiet is the priority, the review says AirPods Pro 3 remain the stronger choice.

Do AirPods 5 sound better than AirPods 4?
Hardy reports richer sound than AirPods 4, particularly stronger bass that still retains clarity. This is a subjective listening comparison, not a controlled test; whether the difference matters will depend on your preferences and listening habits.
What is the fit like?
AirPods 5 retain an open-ear shape without silicone ear tips. Hardy says they stayed in place for him, but fit depends on whether that AirPods shape suits your ears. If silicone tips and a more sealed fit are important to you, these open-ear earbuds may not be the right choice.

Which AirPods 5 configuration should you choose?
Apple announced two configurations on September 9, 2026. The following are U.S. launch prices, not current retail prices; check the listing for today’s price and the exact model.

Apple says the Wireless Charging Case works with Apple Watch chargers, Qi-compatible chargers, and USB-C. The five- and 22-hour figures are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed runtimes. Hardy reports several days between case charges in his own light-to-medium use, but that experience is not a standardized battery test.

For shoppers comparing versions, the Wireless Charging Case is the one to consider if wireless charging, stem-swipe volume adjustment, or its stated battery estimate matters to you. Current prices and stock vary, so verify the variant on the retailer’s listing before buying.
Is AirPods 5 worth upgrading to from AirPods 4?
The strongest reason to consider upgrading is improved ANC while keeping an open-ear fit. The review also reports richer sound, but the noise-cancellation improvement is the more consequential change if outside noise has been a drawback with AirPods 4. Apple announced AirPods 5 store availability beginning September 18, 2026, in the U.S. and more than 65 other countries and regions.

It is a less compelling choice if you already have AirPods 4 and are satisfied with their sound and noise reduction, or if your goal is near-silence: the review places AirPods Pro 3 ahead for that use. Whether the ANC gain is worth the cost depends on your ears, listening environment, and the current price of the configuration you want.

Compatibility and buying checks
- Apple says full feature functionality requires pairing with an Apple device running the latest operating system.
- Some Apple Intelligence and Live Translation features depend on compatible devices, software, languages, or regions; do not assume every feature is available with every setup.
- Hardy reports that the AirPods 5 case is compatible with the previous generation’s case. Verify the exact model and case compatibility against the product listing before relying on this.
- Apple says customers can choose AppleCare+ for AirPods 5 in available markets. Check local availability and current terms if coverage matters to your decision.
