Canceling an older Swift search task is useful, but it does not guarantee that the task stops before returning a result. To keep an outdated result from replacing the latest query’s results, cancel superseded work and verify that each result still belongs to the current request immediately before applying it.
Why canceling a search task is not enough
Swift task cancellation is cooperative. Calling Task.cancel() marks the task as canceled; it does not forcibly interrupt arbitrary code. Apple puts the distinction plainly: “Cancelling a task does not automatically cause arbitrary functions on the task to stop running or throw errors.” (Apple’s Task.cancel() documentation.)
A search operation may therefore finish after cancellation if the work it is doing does not check for cancellation or otherwise respond to it. If that late completion updates the interface or application state without checking whether its query is still current, it can replace results from a newer search.

Cancellation asks obsolete work to stop, which can avoid continuing work that is no longer needed. Request identity answers a separate question: is this completed result still authorized to update the current state? Swift’s cancellation APIs do not provide that ownership decision automatically; the identity check is an application-level design choice.

- Stopping obsolete work: Cancel the prior task when a newer query supersedes it, and make long-running work cooperate with cancellation.
- Preventing stale updates: Check the request’s identity against the current request immediately before applying a result.
- Cleaning up on cancellation: Use a cancellation handler when cancellation needs to trigger prompt cleanup.
- Handling child work: Structured task groups propagate cancellation to child tasks, but that does not replace the ownership check before committing a result.
Track which search request owns the result
A monotonically increasing generation number is one straightforward approach. Each new search advances the generation and captures its value. When work completes, it applies its result only if the captured generation still matches the current one.
- When a new query starts, advance a request generation or create a unique request token.
- Capture that generation or token for the new search, and cancel the task for the superseded search if you retain it.
- Perform the search, checking for cancellation at appropriate points in long-running work.
- Immediately before updating results, compare the captured identity with the current identity. Discard the result if they differ.
The identity comparison is the protection against a late completion overwriting newer results. Cancellation complements it by requesting that superseded work stop; it is not a substitute for the comparison.

Where cancellation checks and handlers fit
Task.checkCancellation() throws when cancellation is observed. Add checks at points where the operation can safely stop, especially when long-running work has meaningful stages. A single check cannot guarantee interruption of code that does not cooperate, so choose check locations based on the work being performed. See Apple’s Task documentation.
A cancellation handler serves a different purpose: it provides a callback for prompt cleanup when a task is canceled. Use it for cleanup that needs to happen on cancellation, not to decide whether a returned search result is still current. The result still needs an ownership check before it changes application state.

How structured concurrency changes the picture
When a search uses a structured task group, cancellation propagates to its child tasks. That helps address whether work in the task tree should continue. It does not establish that a completed result is still the one the application should display. Keep the request-identity check at the point where the result is committed. See Swift.org’s Concurrency guide and TaskGroup documentation.

The exact implementation depends on how the search is built. A single task may need a cancellation request and a result-ownership check; structured child work also benefits from cancellation propagation. If cancellation requires immediate cleanup, add a cancellation handler. The cited Swift documentation explains the concurrency behavior, but it does not prescribe a specific request-token implementation or a framework-specific pattern for SwiftUI, UIKit, a networking client, or a search service.
