Navette is a browser-automation tool for AI agents, not a consumer browser: it exposes navigation, page reading, screenshots, and interactions through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), while relying on WebViews provided by the operating system instead of shipping Chromium. The 594 KB figure belongs to its initial version; the project author later reported a 658 KB macOS arm64 build and roughly 1.2 MB builds for Windows and Linux x64. Those sizes and the performance figures below are the author’s reports, not independently verified comparisons.

What Navette does

Sam LABBE presents Navette as a small Rust binary that lets an AI agent perform browser tasks through MCP. It is intended for agents that need to open pages, extract readable content, capture screenshots, and interact with page elements without downloading a separate Chromium browser engine.

The project describes three operating modes: a loopback HTTP API called serve, an MCP server over standard input/output called mcp, and a resident daemon. In the original description, the MCP tool set included navigate, read, screenshot, click, type, evaluate, wait, sessions, and session_close. The author’s October 4, 2026 update reports 16 tools, adding file upload and scroll among the additions.

How it avoids bundling Chromium

Instead of downloading its own browser engine, Navette drives the WebView supplied by the host operating system. In the original macOS implementation described by LABBE, a WKWebView runs in an off-screen “ghost window,” navigation completion is handled through WKNavigationDelegate, and screenshots are returned as MCP image content.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The project’s platform story changed after the original “macOS today” description. In an October 4, 2026 edit, LABBE reported Windows and Linux support as well as macOS, with screenshots, viewport control, cookie-state export and import, and resident-daemon support. The author also says continuous integration checks that screenshots produce valid PNGs and that cookie state can make a round trip on all three operating systems. These are project-author status reports; they do not establish how every platform behaves across all applications or configurations.

What the reported size and benchmark numbers mean

The title’s 594 KB is the initial-version install-size figure reported by LABBE in 2026. The October 4 update gives later platform figures: 658 KB for macOS arm64 and about 1.2 MB for Windows x64 and Linux x64. The author’s stated reason for the small footprint is that the binary does not bundle Chromium.

LABBE says the benchmark used an M1 machine with 8 GB of RAM, testing 100 local pages and 20 real URLs. The article gives python3 navbench.py as the command, but the figures below remain the author’s reported results: the available material does not establish an independent reproduction.

Measure Navette result reported by the author Context
Install size, initial version 0.6 MB Reported by Sam LABBE in 2026; the title’s 594 KB is this initial-version figure.
Install size, later builds 658 KB macOS arm64; about 1.2 MB Windows x64 and Linux x64 Reported in the October 4, 2026 update.
Cold start, resident daemon 24–37 ms Author-reported benchmark on the stated M1 test machine.
Cold start, fresh process 531–984 ms Author-reported benchmark on the stated M1 test machine.

Action time 1–2 ms Author-reported benchmark on the stated M1 test machine.
Peak memory 79 MB Author-reported benchmark on the stated M1 test machine.
Crawl of 100 pages 0.9–2.8 seconds Author-reported benchmark; the article describes 100 local pages.
Success on real websites 95–100% Author-reported results across 20 URLs.
Playwright plus Chromium install size 216 MB Comparison in LABBE’s stated test setup; not an independent or universal package-size result.
Playwright plus Chromium peak memory 536 MB Comparison in LABBE’s stated test setup; not an independent or universal memory result.
Lightpanda install size About 80 MB Comparison in LABBE’s stated test setup.
Lightpanda peak memory 41 MB Comparison in LABBE’s stated test setup.

These measurements should not be read as expected results for other hardware, sites, software versions, or workloads. The author’s own distinction is that Lightpanda is faster for page-reading-only tasks; its different resource profile reflects that it does not render pages, take screenshots, or perform the same page actions. LABBE describes Navette as a choice for cases where those capabilities matter, not as the fastest option for every browser task.

Where Navette fits—and what it does not replace

The practical choice depends on what an agent must do, not just on the download size. A page reader that only extracts text has different requirements from an agent that must see rendered pages, capture screenshots, or click and type. Navette’s case is that an OS-provided WebView can supply rendering and interactions without a separately bundled Chromium download.

  • Rendering and screenshots: Navette is designed to use the host WebView for rendered pages and screenshots. A reading-only tool may be a better fit when visual rendering is unnecessary.
  • Page interaction: The described MCP tools include actions such as clicking, typing, evaluating page code, and waiting. The author’s October update adds file upload and scrolling.
  • Local versus cloud execution: Navette’s described WebView approach runs on the host machine. LABBE contrasts this with cloud browser APIs, where pages leave the local machine; that is the author’s framing, not an independent privacy audit or a guarantee about every deployment.
  • Operating systems and dependencies: The October 4 update reports macOS, Windows, and Linux support through platform WebViews. The approach avoids bundling a browser engine, but depends on the host platform’s WebView.
  • Automation completeness: A compact interface is not the same as a complete browser-automation API. The author notes limitations around the long tail of automation features.

Known gaps in the October 4 update

As of the October 4, 2026 update, LABBE said several lower-level capabilities were still missing:

Those gaps matter if an agent needs to control native UI outside the page, inspect or alter network traffic, or operate a file picker. The article does not establish that later releases have filled them.

How to read the project’s claims

LABBE’s headline claim, “Houston, we deleted Chromium,” captures the design goal: keep the browser-task interface while relying on a WebView already supplied by the operating system. The same author wrote, “594 KB installed. No Chromium. No download.” These are project claims and promotional framing, not independent findings. The available article and its edited copy provide no third-party benchmark or independent validation of the reported measurements.

For an agent that only needs text extraction, LABBE’s own assessment favors Lightpanda as the faster page reader. For workflows that also need rendering, screenshots, and actions, Navette’s small reported binary and host-WebView design are the more relevant argument. Whether it is a practical replacement depends on the exact operating-system WebView and automation features the workflow requires.
