Inject ActivatedRoute from @angular/router. For a value you need only once, read it from route.snapshot; when the component must update as navigation changes, use an observable such as paramMap, queryParamMap, or data. A snapshot is a point-in-time view, not a live connection to future route state.
What route state does ActivatedRoute expose?
ActivatedRoute represents the route node associated with a component loaded in a router outlet. It provides URL segments, route-specific parameters, query parameters, the fragment, route data, and links to related nodes in the route tree. See Angular’s ActivatedRoute API reference and Read route state guide.
Inject the route into the component whose state you want to read:

import {Component, inject} from '@angular/core';
import {ActivatedRoute} from '@angular/router';
@Component({/* ... */})
export class UserProfile {
private route = inject(ActivatedRoute);
}
The route instance is scoped to that component’s place in the router tree. If a parameter belongs to a parent route rather than this node, inspect the route tree instead of assuming the current route owns it.

Choose a snapshot or an observable
| Need | Use | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Read an initial parameter once | route.snapshot.paramMap |
Synchronous point-in-time value; it does not update for later route changes. |
| Respond to route changes | route.paramMap, route.queryParamMap, route.data, or another route observable |
Receives updates; handle emissions and subscription lifecycle appropriately. |
| Read a path or matrix parameter on this route | params or paramMap |
Values are scoped to the current route node; traverse the tree if needed. |
| Read URL query parameters | queryParams or queryParamMap |
Query parameters are available across routes. |
| Use values prepared before activation | A resolver and route.data |
Resolver timing and rerun policy determine when data is prepared. |
Angular describes snapshots as static route state and documents the route’s observable properties in its route-state guide and API reference.
Read a route parameter once
For a URL such as /users/42 with an id route parameter, read the snapshot’s map:
Rank #2
export class UserProfile {
private route = inject(ActivatedRoute);
readonly userId = this.route.snapshot.paramMap.get('id');
}
paramMap.get() returns the value for the named parameter, or null if it is absent. Use this pattern when the initial value is sufficient and the component will not need to reflect subsequent parameter changes.
React when route parameters change
If Angular keeps the component active while the route parameter changes, subscribe to paramMap instead of treating the original snapshot as current:
Rank #3
export class UserProfile {
private route = inject(ActivatedRoute);
constructor() {
this.route.paramMap.subscribe((params) => {
const userId = params.get('id');
// Update component state for the active user.
});
}
}
Use queryParamMap or queryParams for query-string values, data for route data, and fragment for the URL fragment. These are observables on ActivatedRoute; choose the one matching the state you need. The API notes that route observables emit when current and previous values differ by shallow equality, so mutating a nested resolved-data object by itself does not make data emit. See the API reference.
Read query parameters and keep URL-backed state
Query parameters are shared across routes, unlike route-specific path parameters. Use the map-style queryParamMap API when you want named lookups or need to retrieve multiple values for a parameter; queryParams is the object-style alternative. The same map distinction applies to route-specific paramMap and params.
Rank #4
For filters, sorting, or pagination that should be represented in the URL, Angular’s guide demonstrates observing query parameters and navigating with queryParamsHandling: 'merge' to retain other query values:
router.navigate([], {
queryParams: {sort},
queryParamsHandling: 'merge'
});
For example, merging a new sort value avoids discarding unrelated query-string state such as a filter. See Angular’s Read route state guide.

The injected route corresponds to one node in the route tree. If a value is owned by an ancestor, inspect route.parent or walk route.pathFromRoot. For descendant state, use route.children or route.firstChild. The snapshot has corresponding tree relationships as well. Identify which node declares the parameter before reading it: route-specific parameters are not the same as query parameters shared across routes. See the Router reference and ActivatedRouteSnapshot API reference.
Use resolved route data
A resolver can fetch or prepare data before a route activates. The resolver receives an ActivatedRouteSnapshot and a RouterStateSnapshot, so it can read an identifier through route.paramMap and return the required value. The activated component then reads resolved values through route.data. Angular documents this flow in its Route data resolvers guide.
Reading a changed query parameter and rerunning a resolver are separate behaviors. Angular’s default guard and resolver policy, paramsChange, excludes query parameters. If a resolver must run when a query parameter changes, configure a query-aware policy from the options documented in the RunGuardsAndResolvers API reference.
