If Windows logs “failed fast startup” with status 0xC00000D4, the code alone does not identify a failed component or prove that a particular fix is needed. First check whether the event matches an actual startup problem. If Windows starts and runs normally, record the event details and monitor for recurrence; if startup fails, freezes, or crashes, use recovery steps matched to that symptom.

What does status 0xC00000D4 mean here?

Microsoft’s NTSTATUS reference names 0xC00000D4 STATUS_NOT_SAME_DEVICE. Its general definition describes a rename request whose destination is on a different device from its source. That definition does not establish that a cross-device rename caused this particular Fast Startup event.

Fast Startup is a hybrid shutdown behavior: Windows saves the kernel session and device-driver state to hiberfil.sys so that a later power-on can resume that state. Microsoft explains that “During Fast Startup, the kernel session is not closed, but it is hibernated.” The cited Fast Startup guidance discusses Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 and a different hibernation or shutdown failure; it does not give a code-specific remedy for 0xC00000D4.

First determine whether Windows actually failed to start

Capture the event and nearby symptoms

Open Event Viewer and inspect the System log around the event’s timestamp. Record the provider, event ID, complete message and details, and nearby events. Also note what you experienced: a normal startup, a failed boot, a freeze, an unexpected restart, or a bug check. Microsoft’s startup troubleshooting guidance advises identifying the failure phase and symptoms before selecting a recovery method.

An event by itself—including an adjacent unexpected-shutdown event such as Event ID 6008—does not prove what caused the problem. The causal component cannot be identified from this status alone.

Choose the response based on what happened

  • Windows starts and works normally: Keep the event details and watch whether it recurs or is accompanied by a real symptom. The available evidence does not establish hardware failure or a need to replace a part.
  • Shutdown followed by power-on fails, but Restart works: Compare those paths as a diagnostic check; this can help identify whether the symptom is tied to Fast Startup’s hybrid shutdown path.
  • Windows will not boot, freezes, or produces bug checks: Follow Microsoft’s recovery and diagnostic instructions for that specific failure rather than treating the status as a standalone diagnosis.

Compare Restart with shutdown and power-on

Save your work, select Start > Power > Restart, and observe whether Windows starts normally. Microsoft says Restart performs a full boot cycle and does not use Fast Startup. Then compare that result with a normal shutdown followed by powering the PC on. A difference between the two is useful diagnostic information, not proof of a cause or a guaranteed fix.

Test Fast Startup only if the symptom matches

If the trouble occurs specifically after shutdown and power-on, you can temporarily turn off Fast Startup and test the same sequence. This is a reversible diagnostic experiment, not a verified cure for status 0xC00000D4.

  1. Open Control Panel > Power Options.
  2. Select Choose what the power buttons do.
  3. Select Change settings that are currently unavailable, if shown.
  4. Clear Turn on fast startup (recommended) and save the change.
  5. Shut down Windows, power the PC on, and note whether the original symptom occurs.
  6. If you need to restore the original behavior, return to the same page and re-enable Fast Startup.

A third-party topic-specific guide also suggests disconnecting nonessential external devices and testing again. If you try that, change one thing at a time and reconnect devices after the test; this is only a low-risk isolation step, not evidence that an external drive caused the event. Microsoft’s cited Fast Startup article covers a separate scenario, so its scenario-specific workaround should not be treated as a direct fix for this status.

If Windows has a genuine boot problem, use recovery tools

When Windows cannot start properly, use the matching instructions in Microsoft’s Windows startup troubleshooting guide. For a no-boot problem, its recovery path includes Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and Startup Repair. If Startup Repair runs, review the generated Srttrail.txt log as directed by Microsoft. If Windows can start in Safe Mode, that reduced environment and Event Viewer can help narrow down the issue.

Pick the procedure that matches the observed failure phase. Do not make advanced boot-code or registry changes on a computer that merely recorded this event and otherwise operates normally.

Run system-file checks only when symptoms justify them

If Windows shows relevant corruption symptoms, Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance documents running DISM and then System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
  2. Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and wait for it to finish.
  3. Run sfc /scannow and let the scan complete.

The same Microsoft guidance documents chkdsk /f C: for hard-drive errors and a clean restart to isolate software conflicts during update troubleshooting. These are general diagnostic or repair steps, not guaranteed remedies for the Fast Startup status. If Windows cannot boot, use the relevant offline recovery instructions in Microsoft’s startup guide rather than copying online commands into an unsuitable environment.

When to escalate

If Windows repeatedly fails to boot, freezes, or produces bug checks, keep the event details and follow Microsoft’s symptom-specific startup diagnostics or seek qualified support. The event alone does not justify buying recovery media, replacing storage, or installing an optimization utility.
