There isn’t one way to revive every old Apple game or device. For an iPad or iPod touch app, start with the Apple Account that bought it and check whether it is still available to redownload. For a clickwheel iPod game, a community preservation project is a separate, limited route. If an iPod Classic will not stay powered on, the problem may be its battery—and the replacement depends on the exact model.

Choose the recovery route that matches what is broken

What you want to restore First route to try Main limitation
An app or game bought for iPad or iPod touch Check the purchase history for the Apple Account used to buy it. The item may have been removed, and an old device may not meet its requirements.
A game for a clickwheel iPod Check the current instructions for the community iPod Clickwheel Games Preservation Project. The project reports support for selected iPod generations; that does not guarantee every game or device will work.
A physical iPod Classic that will not hold charge Identify the exact generation and case thickness, then check the matching battery and repair options. Battery fit varies, and opening the device risks damaging delicate parts.
Repair or service from Apple Check service availability for the specific device and your location. Options depend on location and parts availability.

Can you redownload an old iPad or iPod touch game?

Possibly. Apple’s iPad and iPod touch support guides describe redownloading previously purchased content through the Apple Account and purchase history. Sign in with the account used for the original purchase, find the item in that account’s history, and see whether Apple offers it for download.

A past purchase does not guarantee that a game remains available. Apple’s terms allow content to be removed from its services; if that happens, the item may no longer be accessible or available to redownload through Apple. Keep personal backups where possible rather than treating purchase history as a permanent archive.

Why won’t an old iPad install a game I used to play?

Ownership and compatibility are different questions. Apple’s developer documentation explains that an app’s App Store compatibility can depend on the hardware capabilities it requires. An app might appear in your purchase history but still not install or run on a particular iPad or iPod touch.

Check the exact device generation and operating system when assessing an old app. “Available to download” does not mean “works on this device.” If Apple does not offer the app for that device, or the hardware cannot meet its requirements, the purchase alone will not overcome that limit.

Can you still play games on an old clickwheel iPod?

There is a community preservation effort specifically for clickwheel iPod games, distinct from restoring iPad or iPod touch apps. In a 2024 Reddit post, the iPod Clickwheel Games Preservation Project’s author reported that 52 of 54 games had been preserved. That is the author’s project-status claim at the time—not an independently verified count or confirmation of the project’s current status.

The post names iPod nano generations 3, 4, and 5, and iPod Classic generations 5, 6, and 7, as compatible with the project’s approach. That is a limited list, not support for every clickwheel iPod. The discussion also describes account-linked authorization and recovery constraints, so consult the project’s current documentation for its actual requirements rather than assuming a preserved game will simply transfer and launch.

How do you replace an iPod Classic battery?

First identify the precise iPod Classic model, including whether it has a thin or thick case. iFixit lists one battery fit for 80 GB, 120 GB, and thin 160 GB models, and a separate battery for the thick 160 GB version. Those fit details apply to the listed iPod Classic variants; they should not be generalized to an iPod touch, iPad, or every iPod.

iFixit’s battery-replacement guide describes opening the case and replacing the battery, while warning about delicate internal components and the rear panel. The case clips and internal connections can be damaged during a repair, so weigh that risk against the device’s condition and your repair experience. Check the exact model against the part listing before ordering.

Is Apple service still an option?

Apple provides service information for iPod, but service options depend on parts availability and location. Its expired-warranty guidance includes vintage iPod and iPad product categories; that does not mean every older model can still be repaired. Check availability for your exact device and region before relying on Apple service.
