Different numbers do not, by themselves, show that either laboratory made a mistake. A result is meaningful only when you know what quantity was measured, how it was measured, under what conditions, and with what uncertainty. First establish that the reports are comparable; then judge the size and significance of the difference.

Why can two labs get different results?

In measurement science, the quantity a test intends to measure is called the measurand. “The same thing” is not always enough to establish that two reports concern the same measurand. The property may be defined partly by a particular test method; when it is, the method should be identified so readers can tell what the reported result means. NIST TN 1297, Appendix D.4, explains method-defined measurands and the need to make the method clear.

Even when the intended quantity is the same, laboratories may use different method versions, sample preparation, equipment, reference materials, operators, or working conditions. Some differences produce random spread; others can create a consistent offset between laboratories. A result should therefore be read as a measured value together with its associated uncertainty, not as a bare number. NIST’s guidance on combining evaluations describes this value-plus-uncertainty approach and compatibility between results for the same measurand. Read the NIST publication.

Interlaboratory comparisons are designed to study these effects: depending on their design, they can estimate variation across labs, identify systematic differences among a defined group, or help assign a value to an artifact. The number of participating labs, artifact stability, timing, and within-lab replicates all affect what a comparison can establish. NIST’s overview of interlaboratory comparisons describes these purposes and design considerations.

How to compare two lab reports

  1. Confirm the measurand and sample. Check that both reports describe the same property, material, and basis of measurement. If a method defines the measurand, compare the method names and versions. Also check whether the samples are the same sample or demonstrably comparable portions.
  2. Align units and reporting conventions. Compare quantity names, units, symbols, conversions, and rounding. A conversion or inconsistent unit can make equivalent results appear different; inconsistent rounding can obscure the size of a difference. NIST’s guidance on communicating measurement results identifies these and other reporting problems as barriers to interpreting laboratory documents.
  3. Compare methods and conditions. Note sample preparation, method version, equipment, operator, location, timing, and relevant supervisory conditions. These are not incidental details: reproducibility concerns results obtained under changed conditions. As one sector-specific example, the public overview for ISO 4259-1:2026 describes reproducibility conditions involving a different operator, equipment, geographic location, and supervisory control. That standard addresses petroleum and related products, so its scope should not be treated as a rule for every kind of laboratory test.
  4. Read uncertainty and reference information. Compare each reported uncertainty and what it covers. Check the calibration or reference basis, including whether the reference materials deliver the same measurand within their stated uncertainties. Certified reference materials can support comparisons over time and place, but a shared or certified reference does not guarantee comparability unless the measurand and uncertainty basis are also appropriate. See NIST’s discussion of certified reference material comparability.
  5. Separate random spread from a systematic difference. One result from each lab usually cannot reveal whether the gap arose from ordinary variation or a persistent lab-to-lab offset. Replicates and a deliberately designed comparison provide stronger evidence. NIST’s interlaboratory-comparison overview discusses designs that assess random variation and systematic differences.
  6. Use a criterion suited to the method and purpose. Some interlaboratory comparisons use a normalized-error criterion of |En| ≤ 1. NIST describes this as a common criterion, not a universal grade for laboratory quality. Its 2022 analysis warns that large uncertainty assigned to a transfer standard or participant repeatability can reduce |En| and make passing easier; the issue was discussed across reviewed flow, temperature, and pressure comparison reports, not as a prevalence estimate for all labs. See NIST’s evaluation of inter-laboratory comparison data. A separate NIST paper explains that transfer-standard uncertainty can also make comparisons inconclusive. Read that analysis.

Does a different number mean one lab is wrong?

No. A difference may reflect non-equivalent measurands or methods, ordinary variation, a systematic effect, a sample or reference mismatch, or a reporting problem. Conversely, uncertainty does not make every difference acceptable. Whether results are compatible depends on the measurand, their uncertainty statements, the method’s precision rules, and the purpose of the measurement.

The ISO 4259-1:2026 overview says that two or more measurements of the same property of a specific sample by a specific method—or by methods that purport to measure the same property—will not usually give exactly the same result. That is a statement within a standard for petroleum and related products, not a universal acceptance rule. Consult the ISO overview for its scope.

Which lab result should you trust?

A pair of numbers alone cannot identify the correct result or diagnose a lab’s performance. Look for complete reporting, a clearly identified method and measurand, a stated uncertainty, and evidence appropriate to the test’s consequences. For a consequential discrepancy, ask both laboratories for:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the measurand definition and method version;
  • the uncertainty statement or uncertainty budget and the calibration traceability or reference basis;
  • sample handling and preparation details, plus replicate data where available; and
  • any relevant proficiency-testing or interlaboratory-comparison results.

Which details are available or relevant depends on the test and its governing requirements. If the reports remain difficult to compare, ask the laboratories to explain whether their results refer to the same measurand and which method-specific precision or compatibility criterion applies.
