If YouTube will not open, first find out what kind of restriction or error you are seeing. A connection problem, an optional Restricted Mode filter, an administrator-managed account, a mobile carrier filter, or an unsupported app each calls for a different fix. Use the seven checks below to identify the cause and resolve it through the person or setting authorized to change it; they are troubleshooting routes, not guaranteed bypasses.
Identify what is preventing access
An access error alone does not prove YouTube is blocked. Start with the symptom and who controls the relevant connection or account.

1. Check whether your internet connection works elsewhere
Open another website or service. If those also fail, the issue may be the internet connection rather than YouTube. YouTube advises contacting the network administrator or internet service provider when the network may be blocking access. See YouTube’s access troubleshooting guidance.

If you are on a school, work, or public network, ask its administrator whether YouTube access is available under that network’s rules. A YouTube permission change will not fix a general connection outage.

2. Check Restricted Mode
Restricted Mode is an optional filter for potentially mature content; it is not the same as an age restriction on a particular video. When the setting is available to you, a signed-in desktop user can open the profile menu, select Restricted Mode, and turn it off.
If the setting is locked or turns back on, open YouTube’s content restrictions page. It can indicate whether restrictions come from the account, an administrator, or the network. YouTube notes that eligibility for some content depends on the relevant age in the user’s country or region, and that organization or network controls can lock Restricted Mode. If the restriction is managed, ask the party that set it rather than trying to circumvent it.

3. Ask the Google Workspace administrator about a managed account
If YouTube says access is restricted by an administrator, a Google Workspace administrator may not have enabled YouTube as a service for the organization or account. An ordinary user cannot change that service configuration. Contact the school or employer administrator and ask whether access can be enabled for your account. YouTube explains the message in its managed-account access help; administrators can consult Google Workspace’s service settings guidance.
4. Have an authorized administrator adjust organizational access
For an organization that has decided to allow access, an administrator with the required rights can grant it to selected users. In Google Workspace for Education, administrators can also configure restricted or approved-content access and assign video approvers. These are organization-level decisions, not end-user workarounds. Google’s Workspace administrator guidance covers service access. For Education accounts designated as under 18, Google says unrestricted access does not enable access to 18+ content; consult the Education access guidance for applicable settings and limits.

5. Ask an authorized approver to share a school or work video
If your organization restricts YouTube but you need a specific video for an approved purpose, ask an authorized video approver to approve the video or channel. People signed in to that organization can then play it from the shared link. Approval does not put the video in search results, the home page, or recommendations. 6. Switch from an unsupported app or update the official app
If an app displays “The following content is not available on this app,” try YouTube’s official app or open youtube.com in a browser. Update the official YouTube app if an update is available. On an older device that cannot update the app, YouTube suggests using m.youtube.com in a mobile browser, if the device supports it. These options address app compatibility; they do not override an administrator’s account or network restriction. See YouTube’s guidance for unsupported apps and devices.

7. Contact your mobile provider about content filtering
Some mobile providers apply content filters, including DNS filtering. Check YouTube’s content restrictions page for network restrictions. If it identifies moderate or strict DNS filtering, contact your provider to ask how the setting is managed or whether it can be changed on your plan. YouTube specifically directs users with those filters to their mobile provider; the provider, not an app update, controls the carrier setting.

- Other websites fail too: troubleshoot the connection with the provider or network owner.
- Restricted Mode is user-controlled: change it in the profile menu; if locked, identify the managing account or network.
- A managed account shows an administrator message: ask the organization’s authorized administrator.
- A particular school or work video is needed: ask an authorized approver to share it.
- An app reports unsupported content: try the official app or a supported browser route.
- A carrier filter is shown: ask the mobile provider about its filtering setting.
These routes address documented connection, settings, account, provider, and compatibility issues. They do not establish a way to bypass controls set by a school, employer, parent, ISP, or government. A setting or permission can only be changed by someone with authority over it.
