If your monitor accepts VGA and your graphics card has only a DVI-D port, a passive DVI-to-VGA adapter will not work: DVI-D carries digital video, not the analog signal VGA needs. An older graphics card with a native DVI-I port may provide that analog signal, or you can use a compatible DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter if your card has DisplayPort. The key is the exact port type—not simply whether the card is labeled “DVI.”

Why the DVI connector type matters

DVI is a family of connectors, and the signal pins determine what an adapter can do. NVIDIA explains that DVI-D is digital-only, while DVI-I can carry both digital and analog signals.

  • DVI-I: Can provide an analog signal for a VGA display, as well as digital video. A DVI-to-VGA adapter can use the analog pins when they are present.
  • DVI-D: Provides digital video only. A passive DVI-to-VGA adapter cannot create the analog signal VGA requires.

So, “the card has DVI” is not enough to establish VGA compatibility. Check the card’s exact output specification, and do not infer the connector type from the socket’s general appearance alone.

Can I use a VGA monitor with a GeForce GTX 1080, 1070, or 1060?

NVIDIA’s guidance for these named GeForce cards points to a DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter as an option. Check the specific adapter’s supported resolution and refresh rate before buying; an adapter that fits the port is not necessarily suitable for every display mode.

Ruhza DTech DVI Male to VGA Female Adapter High Speed DVI-I24+5 Port Converter for HDTV, Plasma, DVD and Projector
  • ( pls be noted it was DVI -I not DVI -D) It's a DVI-I 24+5 pin DVI to VGA video adapter (m/f) is a great simple accessory between DVI-I and VGA device
  • DVI-I male to VGA female adaptor is designed with gold plated connector resists corrosion and increases durability
  • DVI-VGA converter supports high resolutions up to 1080p Full HD; audio must be transmitted separately (VGA not natively support audio)
  • Small conversion coupler with grip treads and screws makes an easy hook-up and a secure connection
  • For DVI computer to monitor, HDTV or projector with VGA port; an VGA cable is required (sold separately)

If your particular card has DVI-D and no analog-capable output, a passive DVI-to-VGA dongle is not a substitute. Confirm the exact card’s available outputs and choose an adapter that converts a suitable source to VGA.

When an older graphics card with DVI-I can help

An older card with a native DVI-I connector can be useful when you need to connect a VGA display and want to use the port’s analog output with a DVI-to-VGA adapter. ASUS’s 2016 product guide lists representative graphics cards with dual-link DVI-I and DVI-D connectors; these are examples of legacy board configurations, not evidence that every older card has DVI-I or that a particular model will fit your PC.

Choose between a DVI-I card and an adapter

What to check Older card with DVI-I Adapter from a newer card
VGA signal DVI-I includes analog pins that a DVI-to-VGA adapter may use. NVIDIA identifies DisplayPort-to-VGA as an option for the specified GTX 1080, 1070, and 1060 cards.
Digital DVI display Verify the card’s DVI mode and the monitor’s requirements. Verify the exact adapter and graphics output; a VGA converter does not meet a digital-DVI requirement by itself.
Resolution and refresh rate Check the card, port, and display specifications together. Check the adapter’s supported modes; NVIDIA specifically advises checking resolution and refresh-rate support.
PC compatibility Check board dimensions, power, and operating-system drivers; connector documentation does not establish these. Check the adapter’s compatibility and the output ports available on the specific graphics card.

How to verify a card before you buy

  1. Identify the display input. Confirm that the monitor has VGA and note the resolution and refresh rate you intend to use.
  2. Check the exact graphics-card model. Look up its manufacturer specifications and confirm whether the output is DVI-I or DVI-D, or whether it has DisplayPort. NVIDIA’s connector guidance explains the DVI distinction; its comparison page describes connectors for specified Founders Edition or reference designs, so partner-board configurations may differ.
  3. Match the adapter to the source signal. Use DVI-to-VGA only when analog output is available from DVI-I. For the named GTX cards, NVIDIA documents DisplayPort-to-VGA as an alternative; verify the adapter’s supported modes.
  4. Check the rest of the PC requirements. Confirm physical fit, power connections, and driver availability for your operating system. These are separate from connector compatibility.

Specifications can vary by board partner and model. AMD’s graphics specifications expose output fields such as Dual Link DVI, VGA, HDMI, and DisplayPort; use the exact product’s information rather than assuming every card in a family has the same ports.
