Start with Google Search Console for visibility in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Bing Webmaster Tools for citations in Microsoft-supported AI answers. These free, first-party reports show platform-specific activity. Add a paid GEO tool only if you need broader monitoring or reporting workflows—and treat its scores and recommendations as observations or hypotheses, not proof that your visibility will improve.
What GEO tools can—and cannot—tell you
Generative engine optimization (GEO) tools monitor whether a brand or page appears in AI-generated search answers. Depending on the product, they may report impressions, brand mentions, linked citations, cited pages, prompts or grounding queries, competitor presence, and trends.
Those measures are not interchangeable. A brand mention is not necessarily a linked citation; a citation count does not show where a source appeared in an answer; and a visibility score may combine measures defined by the vendor. These tools observe outputs or estimate visibility. They do not reveal a search provider’s internal ranking or AI systems.

The evidence for GEO interventions is also unsettled. A critical survey published July 15, 2026, reviewed 45 studies published from 2023 through July 2026 and describes a field with heterogeneous terminology, metrics, and evidence standards. It does not establish stable, longitudinal, cross-platform causal effects on organic discoverability or downstream behavior. A tool can help you observe changes; its data alone cannot prove that a recommendation caused them.
Best first-party tools for AI search visibility
Google Search Console: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
Use Google Search Console’s Generative AI performance report to monitor organic impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode in Google Search. The report groups results by page, country, date, and device. Google says the insights had rolled out to websites worldwide by August 31, 2026, but a property may not show the report if it has not received enough impressions in Google Search generative AI features. Dates use Pacific Time, and normal Search performance reporting limits apply. See Google Search Console Help.
Rank #2
This is the most direct option for Google-specific data: it reports impressions and the pages shown, not a cross-engine visibility score or a guaranteed way to change placement.

Bing Webmaster Tools: citations in AI answers
Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance dashboard reports total citations shown as sources in AI-generated answers, average unique cited pages per day, sample grounding queries, URL-level citation activity, and trends over time. Microsoft cautions that citation totals do not indicate placement in a particular answer, and average cited pages do not establish ranking, authority, or a page’s role. See Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance.
Rank #3
Microsoft announced Intents, Topics, Citation Share, and Compare capabilities beginning a global preview rollout on June 16, 2026. These features add context and comparison signals, but Microsoft says they do not create a single AI visibility score. Because they are preview features, check availability and behavior in your account. Details: Bing Search Blog’s announcement.
When a paid GEO tool is worth considering
Semrush
Semrush documents Brand Performance reporting across several AI platforms, including brand share of voice, sentiment, AI mentions, citations, and a visibility score. The features are available through Semrush One or the AI Visibility Toolkit. See Semrush’s AI visibility feature documentation.
Rank #4
This establishes the functions Semrush documents, not that its measurements are more accurate or effective than another product’s, nor that using it improves rankings, citations, traffic, or sales. Check current plans, limits, supported platforms, and availability against your needs before choosing it.
A paid product may be useful if you need monitoring beyond what the relevant first-party tools provide—for example, a consolidated workflow for brand mentions and citations across multiple AI platforms. The value depends on its actual coverage and methods, not on the presence of a score. The available product documentation does not support a like-for-like quality ranking of paid GEO platforms.

How to compare GEO tools
Define the monitoring job first, then compare products on the signals and workflow you need:
- Platform and geography: Identify which assistants and AI search features are supported, and whether reporting separates surfaces and countries.
- Visibility definition: Check whether the tool separates brand mentions from linked citations and shows the cited URL and answer context.
- Query methodology: Look for a way to define a stable prompt set. Ask how queries vary, how often they are sampled, and whether results can be repeated consistently.
- Competitors and sources: See whether you can inspect competing brands and the external pages cited in answers.
- Trends and reporting: Check historical comparisons, exports, team or client workflows, and whether any desired features are still in preview.
- Fit and cost: Confirm current pricing and limits for your required number of brands, prompts, platforms, markets, and seats.
- Recommendations: Treat suggested changes as hypotheses. Validate them against first-party data and official search guidance; a visibility change alongside an edit does not establish that the edit caused it.
A practical way to use the reports
- Choose the search surfaces that matter. For Google Search AI Overviews and AI Mode, begin with Google Search Console. For Bing-supported AI answers, use Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Establish a baseline. Record the report’s available impressions or citation measures, relevant URLs, dates, and markets. Keep each platform’s metrics separate rather than treating them as one universal visibility number.
- Add a third-party tool only for a defined gap. If you need broader platform monitoring or a consolidated workflow, verify that the product covers the platforms, prompts, and reporting controls you actually require.
- Investigate page and answer context. Where available, review which pages are shown or cited and the queries associated with them. A count without context may not explain what users saw.
- Make changes using established SEO guidance, then monitor. Use official search guidance when deciding what to change. Compare subsequent reporting with the baseline, but do not attribute a change to one intervention without evidence that can support causation.
What the numbers do not prove
- More mentions do not necessarily mean more linked citations or better placement.
- More citations or cited pages do not by themselves establish ranking, authority, referral traffic, or business impact.
- A vendor-defined visibility score is not a search engine’s own ranking measure.
- A change after an optimization does not prove the optimization caused it.
No general GEO-tool effectiveness statistic is established by the sources cited here. Avoid claims about universal tool accuracy, citation lifts, AI search traffic, or return on investment unless they are supported by specific, well-designed evidence.
