Landscape Face ID works on iPhone 13 models and later running iOS 16 or later. Earlier iPhones support Face ID only in portrait, and Face ID with a Mask works only in portrait on iPhone. Face ID-enabled iPads work in any orientation. Check those limits first; if your device qualifies, use the steps below to troubleshoot settings, obstructions, positioning, and software before resetting Face ID.
First, check whether your device supports landscape Face ID
Apple states that “Face ID works in portrait and landscape orientation on iPhone 13 models and later using iOS 16 and later.” That means both the iPhone model and its software version matter.

If you are using an iPhone 12 or older, turning the phone sideways will not enable Face ID. Hold it in portrait instead. If you have a supported iPhone but use Face ID with a Mask, try portrait orientation or turn off the mask option and authenticate with your face unobstructed.

10 fixes to try when a supported iPhone will not recognize you sideways
1. Confirm your iPhone model and iOS version
Check that the phone is an iPhone 13 model or later and is running iOS 16 or later. To check the software version, go to Settings > General > About. If the phone is eligible but not yet on iOS 16, install an available update before testing landscape Face ID.
2. Turn off Face ID with a Mask for landscape use
On iPhone, Face ID with a Mask is limited to portrait. If that feature is enabled, turn it off when you want to unlock with Face ID in landscape, then try again with your full face visible. You can also use Face ID in portrait while keeping the mask feature enabled.

3. Check Face ID setup and feature permissions
Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode. Confirm Face ID is set up and enabled for the specific task that is failing, such as unlocking the iPhone. Face ID can be enabled for some uses and not others.

4. Clear the TrueDepth camera area
Wipe smudges from the front camera area and check whether a case or screen protector overlaps it. Remove an obstruction and test again. Apple advises clearing smudges and checking for accessories that might block the camera; it does not require a particular cleaning product.

5. Make sure your face is visible
Keep your eyes, nose, and mouth visible to the camera. Move anything blocking your face and avoid placing a mask so high that it covers your eyes. If you are testing with Face ID with a Mask enabled, remember that the feature itself does not support landscape on iPhone.
6. Adjust your distance and position
Face the camera and hold the iPhone at a workable distance: Apple recommends arm’s length or closer, approximately 10–20 inches from your face. The camera needs a clear view, similar to the field of view used for a selfie or FaceTime call.

7. Check rotation lock if the screen will not rotate
If the display itself stays in portrait, open Control Center and check the screen orientation lock. Turn it off if you want the screen to rotate. Rotation lock controls display rotation; it does not add landscape Face ID support to an iPhone model that lacks it. See Apple’s guide to rotating the iPhone screen.
8. Install available iOS updates
Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install an available update. Apple recommends using the latest iOS or iPadOS when troubleshooting Face ID. After updating, test again in landscape if your iPhone model supports it.

9. Restart the iPhone, then enter your passcode
Restart the device, unlock it with your passcode, and try Face ID again. Apple recommends entering the passcode after a restart before testing Face ID.
10. Reset Face ID, then arrange service if needed
If the other checks do not help, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Reset Face ID, then choose Set Up Face ID and follow the prompts. If the camera is not working or you cannot complete setup, the device may need service. Apple says only trained technicians should service the device.

When attention settings may be relevant
Apple describes Face ID as attention-aware and provides related options at Settings > Accessibility > Face ID & Attention. These settings may be worth checking if Face ID behaves unexpectedly in general, but Apple’s troubleshooting guidance does not identify them as a specific fix for landscape-only failures.
