For an Android feature that reacts when a device enters or leaves an area, register geofences and handle transition events instead of keeping a high-accuracy location loop running in the background. Geofencing uses the Fused Location Provider to monitor proximity with less frequent location work, trading immediate, uniform alerts for better battery efficiency. Design for delayed delivery, choose radii that fit real location accuracy, and keep only the fences the user currently needs.

Choose geofencing for proximity, not continuous polling

A geofence represents an area around a location. Your app registers the areas it cares about, then receives events such as entry, exit, or dwell through a PendingIntent. Android’s Geofencing API is built on the Fused Location Provider and is intended for battery-aware proximity monitoring. It is a better fit for questions such as “Has the user arrived near this place?” than for a continuous, point-by-point track. See Android’s geofencing guide.

On Android 8.0 (API 26) and later, background apps receive location updates only a few times per hour. That limit makes a frequent app-owned polling loop both a poor way to get prompt background transitions and an unnecessary source of battery use. Reserve sustained high-accuracy updates for a foreground experience that genuinely needs a live location, such as an active navigation screen. For area-based triggers, use geofences; Android explains the background limits in its background location guidance.

Approach What it is suited to Battery and timing trade-off
Geofencing Area-linked actions: arrival, departure, or a sustained visit Usually less location work, but transitions are asynchronous and can be delayed.
Continuous location updates A foreground feature that needs a continuing stream of positions More granular tracking can require more frequent computation and power; background updates are constrained on Android 8.0 and later.

Android describes background limits as improving geofencing battery performance “up to 10 times better on some devices” when responsiveness changes from tens of seconds to approximately two minutes. Treat that as a limited platform statement, not a guaranteed saving or benchmark for your application. The Android battery guidance covers the trade-offs.

Build the transition path around a receiver

Register the desired set

Use GeofencingClient.addGeofences(GeofencingRequest, PendingIntent) to register the geofences and a transition-delivery PendingIntent. The app should maintain an explicit desired set of fences based on the feature’s current needs, rather than treating every candidate location as permanently monitored. Model each fence with the transitions the product actually needs: enter, exit, dwell, or an intentional combination.

Handle the event without launching an activity

Deliver the transition to a BroadcastReceiver, inspect the event, and hand off any work that can safely happen later. A transition intent is not a reason to open an activity by itself; app-visible UI should follow a user action. Keep receiver processing short and bounded. Because delivery is asynchronous and the process can be stopped or recreated, make the event handler idempotent: processing the same effective transition more than once should not duplicate a purchase, notification, or other side effect. Idempotency is an engineering safeguard, not a guarantee about exact delivery semantics.

Use a scheduler such as WorkManager for deferrable follow-up work. If the user-facing outcome truly needs urgent execution, assess whether it qualifies for a foreground service and comply with the applicable service and permission rules; a geofence event is not blanket permission to start arbitrary background work.

Choose enter, exit, and dwell intentionally

Enter and exit suit features that should react to crossing a boundary. If a brief pass-by should not count as a visit, use GEOFENCE_TRANSITION_DWELL with a suitable loitering delay to reduce drive-by alerts. A dwell delay adds time before action, so it is appropriate only when the product values a sustained presence over an immediate entry signal. Android’s geofencing guide describes dwell and transition configuration.

Remove fences when they stop being useful

Remove geofences when the user disables the feature, leaves the relevant area, or the monitored places are no longer relevant. Android notes that stopping monitoring can save battery power and CPU cycles. Avoid needless remove-and-readd churn when the system can restore monitoring itself: the guide says Google Play services upgrades or restarts and location-process crashes are restored by the system.

Balance responsiveness, radius, and false triggers

There is no single setting that maximizes accuracy, minimizes computation, and delivers every event immediately. Geofencing necessarily balances location accuracy, how often the system computes location, and how long it can wait before delivering a transition. Set expectations in the product around that trade-off rather than promising an exact arrival instant.

Design choice Android guidance or behavior Product consequence
Notification responsiveness Android recommends five minutes or more to preserve power; longer can conserve more power when the use case tolerates additional delay. See battery guidance. Choose the longest delay the user outcome can tolerate. Do not use a short window to imply guaranteed immediate delivery.
Geofence radius Android’s general minimum-radius starting guidance is 100–150 m. Wi-Fi location is commonly 20–50 m when available; without Wi-Fi, rural accuracy can degrade to hundreds of meters or kilometers. See the geofencing guide. A smaller boundary may be missed when location uncertainty exceeds the radius. A larger boundary can trigger farther from the intended place.
Transition type Enter/exit can react to boundary crossings; dwell plus a loitering delay filters brief visits. See the geofencing guide. Use dwell for stop-or-visit intent; use entry or exit when crossing itself matters.

The 100–150 m figure is a general platform starting point, not a guarantee that a fence of that size will work everywhere. The location source commonly favors network location to reduce power and support indoor availability. Wi-Fi availability, local radio conditions, and the user’s environment affect the result. Set the radius and consequence of a trigger together: a low-consequence reminder may tolerate a broader boundary, while a costly or disruptive action needs stronger safeguards than geofence proximity alone.

Scale beyond the 100-geofence limit

An app can register at most 100 geofences at once. For a larger catalog, keep an application-level set of currently relevant locations instead of attempting to register every candidate place. Android documents a hierarchical pattern: register a broad region, then add nearby smaller regions when the device enters it and remove those local fences on exit. See Android’s real-world location scenarios.

  1. Persist the candidate locations and selection rules. Keep the product’s location catalog and the currently desired fence definitions separate from assumptions about the process being alive.
  2. Register a broad enclosing region. Use it to detect when the device is near a part of the larger catalog.
  3. Replace broad coverage with local fences on entry. Select the most relevant nearby locations according to product geography and user priorities, and keep the registered set within the 100-fence ceiling.
  4. Remove local fences on exit and restore broader coverage. Reconcile the registered set with the persisted desired set so coverage follows the device without accumulating stale registrations.

Android documents the hierarchical approach, but it does not prescribe a universal ranking or eviction algorithm. The right local set depends on which places matter most to the user and how the product handles movement between regions.

Use a two-stage design when proximity must lead to detail

If a feature needs more precise tracking only near a place, do not run detailed updates everywhere. Register a broad geofence as the low-power wake-up condition; after entry, request more granular fused location updates for the active experience, then stop those updates on exit. Android documents this kind of broad-area-plus-updates pattern for home/work-style scenarios in its location scenarios.

Keep the high-frequency phase limited to the time and area where it provides user value. For passive tracking that is genuinely needed, Android recommends PRIORITY_NO_POWER when possible; otherwise prefer balanced or low-power requests and avoid sustained high accuracy. Opportunistic updates can reuse locations computed for other apps, but your own CPU and I/O work still consumes power. See Android’s battery guidance.

Handle permissions and background execution as separate decisions

Request only the access the feature needs

Background geofencing accesses location while the app is not visible. Android says background location should be critical to the app’s core functionality, offer a clear user benefit, and be explained transparently. For apps targeting Android 10 (API 29) or later, check whether ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION is needed; Android recommends removing it if the feature does not require all-the-time access. Google Play policy adds a separate review constraint, and following Android’s best practices does not guarantee Play approval. See Android’s background location guidance.

Ask for the least location access that supports the feature. If approximate or coarse location is sufficient, make the feature usable with it. Explain the user benefit in context before requesting background access, and verify the exact runtime permission sequence for the app’s target SDK and the Android versions it supports; the sequence is version-dependent.

Do not treat a geofence event as an unrestricted service exemption

Android 12 (API 31) and later generally restrict apps targeting API 31 or higher from starting a foreground service while in the background, subject to enumerated exceptions. Android lists a geofencing-related event among the exceptions to the general restriction, but location foreground services have separate while-in-use permission requirements. On Android 14 (API 34) and later, service-type permissions are checked when a service is created; a background app can encounter SecurityException if it creates a location service without applicable while-in-use access. Check the exact event, service type, permission, target SDK, and OS version against Android’s foreground-service restrictions.

Use the least persistent execution mechanism that meets the user-facing latency requirement. Schedule deferrable work; use a foreground service only when the work qualifies and the applicable requirements are met. A foreground service is not a way to bypass background limits or make an inherently low-power geofence deliver immediately.

Design for delayed alerts and recovery

Set realistic delivery expectations

Geofence monitoring is not continuous GPS polling. Android’s current geofencing guide gives indicative alert timing of usually under two minutes while moving, approximately two to three minutes on average under background limits, and up to six minutes after the device has been stationary for a significant time. These are platform guidance, not a service-level guarantee; actual timing varies by device, OS, location conditions, and settings. See the guide, last updated October 1, 2026: Create and monitor geofences.

Diagnose poor or missing transitions

Android identifies several conditions that can delay or prevent alerts. Check these before assuming a receiver or registration bug:

  • Radius too small: the available location accuracy may not be enough to resolve the boundary.
  • Wi-Fi disabled: network-based location may be less useful, particularly indoors.
  • Weak or absent network connectivity: location availability and event timing can suffer.
  • Network Location Provider disabled: the expected location source may be unavailable.
  • Device or OS differences: location behavior varies with conditions and implementation.

Use SettingsClient to check location settings and guide the user to enable the settings the feature needs. When appropriate, explain that Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi scanning can improve location availability. Android 10 and later apps generally cannot toggle Wi-Fi directly except in privileged cases, so guide the user rather than trying to switch it on. See Android’s geofencing troubleshooting guidance.

Reconcile registrations after documented resets

Persist the desired fence definitions independently of the app process. Restore the required registrations after device reboot, app reinstall, app-data clearing, Google Play services data clearing, or a GEOFENCE_NOT_AVAILABLE condition when monitoring remains necessary. Android says Google Play services upgrades/restarts and location-process crashes are restored by the system, so avoid adding unnecessary registration churn for those cases. These recovery rules are described in the geofencing guide; persisting and reconciling desired state is an application design implication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make reconciliation safe to repeat: compare the desired set with what the app intends to monitor, restore missing required fences, and remove ones the feature no longer needs. This keeps process lifecycle and device-reset recovery from silently becoming the source of stale or absent monitoring.
