Start with your department’s software and operating-system requirements, then choose a laptop configuration that fits your coursework. For a configurable Windows option, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD has two SODIMM slots and supports up to 64GB of memory; for macOS, the 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 starts with 16GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD. Neither is right for every student: the exact course requirements and model configuration matter more than the model name alone.
Check course and department requirements first
Before buying, check the current requirements for your university, department, and courses. Required applications may depend on a particular operating system or hardware capability, and a computer that handles general programming well may still be incompatible with a lab tool.
For example, the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science’s 2025–2026 laptop specifications, updated in 2024, list 32GB DDR5 memory and a 512GB M.2 NVMe SSD for its engineering students. The university says its support does not cover macOS or Windows on ARM for certain engineering applications. That is guidance for those CEAS programs and applications, not a general requirement for computer science majors elsewhere.
If you are unsure, ask the department or course instructor whether your required tools work on the operating system and processor architecture you plan to buy. Check again close to purchase, since course requirements and product configurations can change.

Choose the operating system and configuration for your workload
For ordinary programming coursework, prioritize compatibility, adequate memory and SSD storage, and a comfortable setup for long study sessions. Lenovo’s computer-science student guidance points to development tools, virtual machines, containers, and datasets as workload considerations. It also distinguishes integrated graphics from dedicated-GPU systems for more demanding AI, deep-learning, and data-processing work.
There is no single configuration that fits every CS student. A laptop used mainly for coding and coursework has different needs from one expected to run multiple virtual machines, large local datasets, simulations, or GPU-intensive software. Compare the specific configuration on sale—not just the family name—and consider the cost of any upgrade you may need.

| Option | Documented specifications | Potential fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 5 AMD | Lenovo’s product specifications reference lists Ryzen 5 PRO and Ryzen 7 PRO options, configurations with 16GB of SODIMM memory and a 512GB SSD, two SODIMM slots, and support for up to 64GB of memory. Exact configurations vary. | A Windows-oriented student who values a documented memory upgrade path. | Confirm the processor, included memory, SSD, display, and operating system for the exact SKU. Do not assume every listing includes the same parts. |
| Apple MacBook Air 13-inch with M5 | Apple’s 2026 specifications list a 16GB unified-memory baseline, configurable at purchase to 24GB or 32GB; a 512GB SSD baseline, configurable to 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB; a 13.6-inch display; and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. | A student whose required courses and development tools work on macOS and who wants a compact laptop. | Confirm software and lab compatibility. The listed unified memory is configurable at purchase; it is not a user-upgrade path. |
These figures describe the named product configurations, not universal recommendations for students. Check the manufacturer’s current specifications and the retailer’s exact SKU before ordering; availability and configurations may vary by region.

How much memory and storage should a CS student look for?
Memory
Memory use depends on what you run at once. A code editor and browser have different demands from several containers, virtual machines, or large datasets. Lenovo’s guidance identifies 16GB and 32GB options across systems and notes that virtual machines, containers, and large datasets can use substantial memory. Treat those as configuration examples, not a universal minimum.

- Security & OS: TPM 2.0 | Fingerprint Reader (Power Button) | IR Facial Recognition | Windows 11 Pro. Backlit English EU Keyboard | Thin 16" Black Chassis | Ideal for Business, Education, Hybrid Work
If you want the option to increase memory later, check whether the laptop uses replaceable modules and how much memory the manufacturer supports. The T14 Gen 5 AMD reference lists two SODIMM slots and support for up to 64GB, but confirm the configuration and upgrade requirements for the specific machine. The MacBook Air’s unified memory is selected at purchase, so choose the capacity you expect to need rather than planning to add memory later.
Storage
An SSD holds your operating system, development tools, course files, and local datasets. A 512GB SSD appears in both example configurations, but whether that is enough depends on your software, files, and whether you keep larger datasets or virtual-machine images locally. Compare the drive capacity in the exact SKU and check whether the storage can be upgraded before treating a family’s specifications as your own.
When do you need a dedicated GPU or workstation?
Most students should not buy a heavier or more expensive GPU system solely because they are studying computer science. Integrated graphics can suit coding and many general coursework tasks. A dedicated GPU or workstation-class system is more relevant when required software or a student’s own workload calls for GPU acceleration, specialized simulations, or other demanding processing.
Lenovo describes Legion and ThinkPad P or ThinkStation systems as options for more demanding or specialized workloads, depending on configuration. That does not make them necessary for every CS major. Check the actual course software and whether the work must run locally; when requirements are unclear, ask the department before paying for graphics hardware you may not use.

Compare the daily-use details, not just processor names
- Portability and battery: Consider how often you carry the laptop between classes and whether you can reliably charge it during the day. Battery life varies by configuration and use; neither product-family name alone establishes how long it will last in your routine.
- Display: Consider screen size, resolution, aspect ratio, and whether you will often connect an external display. Apple lists a 13.6-inch display for the MacBook Air M5; check the exact Lenovo configuration for its display.
- Keyboard: If you will type for hours, comfort and layout matter. Try the keyboard if possible, or review the exact model’s layout before purchase.
- Ports and external displays: Check which connections your peripherals and monitors require. Apple lists two Thunderbolt 4 ports on the Air M5; verify the port selection and external-display support for the exact model you consider.
- Repair and upgrades: If you expect to replace or increase memory or storage, verify what is serviceable, what the manufacturer supports, and whether opening the device affects warranty coverage.
- Price: Compare the price of the exact configuration, including the memory and storage you need. A model family’s starting configuration may not be the one you are evaluating.
An external monitor or USB-C hub can help with a desk-based setup or additional connectivity, but neither is required for a computer science degree. Check compatibility with your laptop before buying accessories.
