In the US, how you use PayPal Credit depends on which account form PayPal approves: a digital credit line works at eligible PayPal checkouts, while the PayPal Credit Card can also be used wherever Mastercard is accepted. Approval is required, and PayPal assigns the form; you cannot choose between them. Both are issued by Synchrony Bank, subject to credit approval. PayPal’s product page explains the options.
PayPal Credit card vs. digital line: what can you use?

PayPal decides which form an approved applicant receives based on credit history. PayPal Credit may not be offered for every purchase, even when the merchant accepts PayPal. PayPal’s product information describes the forms and acceptance.

How to apply and use PayPal Credit
1. Apply through PayPal
Apply through the PayPal website or app. Applicants provide their date of birth, after-tax income, and the last four digits of their Social Security number, agree to the terms, and receive a decision within seconds, according to PayPal. You must be the legal age in your state and a US customer. Applying does not guarantee approval; PayPal determines whether an approved applicant receives the card or digital line. - At a merchant that offers PayPal, choose PayPal at checkout.
- Review the payment options shown for that purchase and select PayPal Credit if it appears.
- Review the purchase and financing terms displayed for the transaction before confirming.
The digital line is not a general-purpose card number for purchases outside PayPal checkout. Availability is transaction-specific. PayPal explains where PayPal Credit can be used.

3. Use the PayPal Credit Card
If PayPal approves you for the card, use it online or in person wherever Mastercard is accepted. At a merchant with PayPal checkout, you can also select the card as the payment method if it is offered. Acceptance of Mastercard does not mean every online checkout will display PayPal Credit as a separate PayPal option.
What does PayPal Credit cost?
PayPal’s product page, accessed October 7, 2026, advertises six months of special financing for qualifying purchases of $149 or more, subject to terms and credit approval. Minimum monthly payments are required. If the promotional balance is not paid in full within the six-month period, interest is charged from the purchase date. Check the offer and deadline shown for your transaction; promotional availability and terms can vary. PayPal’s current product page describes the offer.
The PayPal Credit terms dated January 1, 2026 state a 29.64% variable purchase APR, which varies with the market based on the prime rate, with a maximum purchase APR of 35.99%. These are terms dated January 1, 2026, not a guarantee of the rate on your account today. Review your current account terms and the checkout disclosure for the applicable rate. The six-month offer is deferred-interest financing, not a promise that paying only the minimum will clear the purchase in time. If the promotional purchase is not fully paid by its deadline, interest can be imposed retroactively from the purchase date at the applicable variable purchase APR. Continue making at least the required minimum payment by each statement due date, and check your remaining promotional balance and deadline separately. Pay at least the minimum payment due by the due date shown on your statement. PayPal lists online, app, phone, and mail payment options. For online or app payments, follow these steps:
- Sign in to PayPal and open your PayPal Credit account. In the app, open the account from the dashboard and tap Make a Payment.
- Choose the payment amount, payment method, and payment date.
- Review the details and submit the payment. You can make a one-time payment, schedule a future payment, or set up autopay online.
A payment may take several business days to appear in available credit. Making a payment does not necessarily make that credit available immediately. PayPal’s payment instructions provide the available methods and app steps.

Why PayPal Credit may not appear at checkout
PayPal lists several possible reasons the credit option may not work for a purchase:

- There is not enough available credit for the transaction.
- A recent payment has not posted yet.
- PayPal needs you to verify your identity or billing details.
- The account is closed.
- PayPal Credit is unavailable for that particular purchase.
Check available credit in your PayPal dashboard and make sure the checkout details match your PayPal account. If the option is still missing, use another payment method offered at checkout. A payment that has not posted may take several business days to increase available credit. PayPal lists checkout availability issues and possible causes.
