To stop an iPhone from checking a particular email account through Push, open Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts > Fetch New Data. Select the account and choose Manual if that option is available. You can instead choose a Fetch schedule for periodic background checks. The options depend on the email provider, and Mail notifications are controlled separately.
Change how an email account receives new messages

Open Settings.

Tap Apps, then Mail.

Tap Mail Accounts, then Fetch New Data.

Select the email account you want to change. Choose Manual to check for new messages on demand, if that choice appears. To have Mail check periodically, select one of the available Fetch schedules.

Apple describes Fetch New Data as the place to set a fetch schedule for email accounts in its iPhone Mail settings guide. The exact account choices can vary by email service and iOS version.

Push: The email service sends new messages to Mail as they become available. Push is offered only for services that support it.

Fetch: Mail checks for new messages on a schedule. The available frequencies depend on the account.

Manual: Mail checks when you ask it to, rather than checking on a scheduled basis for that account.

Apple says an account defaults to Fetch if Push is not available as a setting. Its email troubleshooting guidance also describes Automatically as downloading new data in the background only when the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi; Apple notes this behavior applies with iOS 11 and later and iPadOS. Automatically is therefore different from Push and from choosing a timed Fetch frequency.
Choosing Manual is useful when you prefer to check on demand, but it does not promise immediate delivery, and Apple does not publish a quantified battery saving for this change.

Why Push may be missing
Push availability depends on the email provider, so a missing Push control does not necessarily indicate a problem. Apple’s guidance is that accounts without Push support use Fetch instead. For iCloud Mail, Apple specifically instructs users to turn on Push and choose Automatically under Fetch in its iCloud Mail troubleshooting steps. Available options may differ from one account to another.
Stop alerts without changing message retrieval
Retrieval controls determine when Mail checks for messages; they do not turn notification alerts on or off. To change alerts, sounds, or badges, go to Settings > Apps > Mail > Notifications > Customize Notifications, then choose an account and adjust its notification settings.

If new email still does not appear

Check that the iPhone has an internet connection and that the email provider is not experiencing an outage.

Confirm the account password with the provider, and check whether the provider or your organization requires additional security settings.

If messages arrive but you do not receive alerts, review Mail’s notification settings separately.

Before removing and setting up an account again, verify that its messages are available on the provider’s website or elsewhere. Apple warns that previously downloaded email may be removed from the iPhone when account settings are changed or an account is deleted.
