Yes—after you authorize it, Claude can control a Sonos system through Sonos 27mcp, the company’s official connector for MCP-capable assistants. It supports useful playback, volume, grouping, Favorites, playlists, and selected home-theater controls, but it does not expose every Sonos API operation or feature. And the official route is cloud-mediated, not Claude reaching directly to a speaker on your home network.
So, can Claude control your Sonos over MCP, and what can the Sonos APIs actually do? The key is to distinguish Sonos 27mcp, the broader Control API, and SMAPI: they serve different purposes and have different boundaries.
What Sonos 27mcp can control
Sonos describes 27mcp as a connector that lets MCP-capable AI assistants, including Claude, connect to and control a Sonos system using natural language. The documented controls cover common listening tasks, not every possible operation in Sonos’s developer APIs. Sonos says the connector is available in US-English. - Play music from supported connected services; Sonos ties service support to services that work with Sonos Voice Control and 27voice.
- Play, pause, skip tracks, and seek.
- Adjust volume or mute a product or group.
- Group products or move audio between them.
- Play Sonos Favorites and playlists, and set shuffle or repeat.
- Use line-in and supported home-theater features such as Night Sound and Speech Enhancement.
These are Sonos’s stated 27mcp capabilities, not a guarantee that every service, speaker feature, or Control API command is available through Claude. Natural-language control is also not a promise that every multi-part request will execute exactly as phrased.

How to connect Claude to Sonos 27mcp
Sonos’s documented Claude setup uses its built-in connector flow. You must approve access before Claude can control the system.
- In Claude, open Settings > Connectors and locate Sonos.
- Select the connector and begin connecting. Approve the Sonos Cloud MCP authorization in Anthropic’s flow.
- Sign in to your Sonos system, review the requested permissions, and approve them.
- Start a new chat and try a single, clear Sonos action.
For other MCP-capable clients, Sonos publishes the remote server endpoint https://mcp.ws.sonos.com/mcp. The registration steps depend on the assistant; follow that client’s method rather than assuming every app uses Claude’s connector screen. Sonos’s 27mcp setup guide

Does Claude talk to the speaker locally or through the cloud?
The official 27mcp route is remote. Anthropic says requests to remote MCP connectors originate from Anthropic’s cloud infrastructure, including when you use Claude Desktop or Cowork. That differs from a local MCP server configured separately in Claude Desktop, which uses the local network and is not available in claude.ai or Cowork. Sonos’s Control API likewise uses a cloud gateway to route commands to a household, group, session, or player. Sonos’s Architecture documentation is explicit: “The Control API on the LAN is not available for wide release.” The official 27mcp setup therefore should not be mistaken for direct local access to a speaker. What the Sonos Control API means by “control”
The Control API is Sonos’s JSON-based application interface for discovering and controlling players and groups, then subscribing to events such as playback-state changes or track metadata. Its cloud gateway is documented under the base path api.ws.sonos.com/control/api/v1. A typical integration authorizes, discovers households and players, sends commands, and optionally subscribes to group namespaces for updates. A Sonos household contains players associated with an account on the same network. Players are always in groups, even when a group contains only one player. Players grouped together play the same audio in synchrony; transport actions such as play, pause, or skipping tracks target a group, and the cloud routes most commands to its coordinator. This is why an instruction aimed at a room may depend on how the system is grouped at that moment.

The API also has practical limits. Sonos does not guarantee that commands will be processed by the player in the order they were requested. For developers, documented failure causes include missing or invalid parameters, insufficient permission, unknown or expired resources, and rate limits. A long instruction that combines several changes is therefore less predictable than issuing and checking one action at a time.

SMAPI is not a second way for Claude to direct a speaker. Sonos documents it as the interface Sonos uses to communicate with music services, while the Control API is for controlling players. Sonos also says service partners must integrate their service with Sonos before using the Control API to control players. Can you use 27mcp without enabling UPnP?
Sonos’s 27mcp setup guide does not say to enable UPnP or change local connection-security settings. Do not treat a UPnP change as a prerequisite for the official connector.
Sonos labels UPnP unsupported in its connection-security guidance and warns that turning it off also prevents the Sonos apps for macOS and Windows from controlling the system. The same page lists defaults of Authentication off, UPnP on, and Guest Access on, and cautions that changing defaults may interrupt integrations. What to try when a command fails
- Test the same action in play.sonos.com. Sonos recommends this to help determine whether the problem is specific to the assistant.
- If the action works in the Sonos app but not through Claude, check the assistant’s connector settings and authorization.
- Reduce a complex instruction to one action, test it, then issue the next action separately. This follows Sonos’s troubleshooting advice and avoids relying on an execution order the Control API does not guarantee.
