If Windows still says “Network cable unplugged” after you reconnect the cable, it means Windows is not detecting an active wired link on that adapter. The message alone cannot tell you whether the problem is the cable, a router or switch port, the computer’s Ethernet jack or adapter, or its driver. Check the physical connection first, then test one component at a time before changing Windows settings.
What “Network cable unplugged” means
Dell notes that Windows can display “Network cable unplugged” even when the cable is connected. Treat the message as a link-status warning, not a diagnosis: reconnecting the cable does not establish which part of the connection has failed. The troubleshooting sequence below applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11; labels and locations can vary by Windows version.
Check the cable and connection points
Reseat both ends
- Unplug the Ethernet cable from the computer and from the router, modem, or switch.
- Check the plugs and jacks for debris, visible damage, or a broken retaining latch. Reinsert both plugs firmly.
- If you connect through a USB-to-Ethernet adapter or dock, check that device’s USB connection as well.
ASUS recommends checking that the cable is firmly connected and that its connector latch is intact. ASUS wired-network troubleshooting and Dell wired-network troubleshooting also advise checking the physical connection.
Swap the cable and port separately
Change one item at a time so you can tell which change affects the link:

- Try a known-good Ethernet cable. If possible, test the original cable with another device.
- Move the cable to a different router, modem, or switch port.
- If the computer has more than one Ethernet jack, try the other one.
A cable that works with another device is less likely to be the problem; a different cable or port that restores the link helps narrow down the failed segment. Neither test alone proves that every other part is healthy.
Determine whether the problem is the PC or the network equipment
Connect another computer or wired device using the same network equipment. If multiple devices fail through the same router, modem, or switch, investigate that shared equipment or contact your internet service provider. If another device works with the same cable and port, focus next on the affected computer’s Ethernet adapter and driver.

These comparisons help separate a PC-side issue from a shared network issue, but they do not identify a specific failed component without further testing.
Check Ethernet in Windows
Confirm that the adapter is available
Check that Ethernet is enabled in Windows and that the wired adapter appears in Device Manager. If the adapter is missing, that is not conclusive proof of hardware failure: it may be disabled or its driver may be missing. Dell also recommends checking whether onboard LAN is enabled in the computer’s BIOS when appropriate.

Run the network troubleshooter
In Windows 11, open Settings and search for “Network troubleshooter” or “Network Adapter troubleshooter”; menu locations can change between versions. A Microsoft Q&A community response dated March 4, 2025, suggested Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. That is community guidance, not an official Microsoft support article, and the exact labels may differ on your PC. ASUS and Dell also document using Windows network troubleshooting tools.
Update or reinstall the Ethernet driver carefully
If the adapter appears in Device Manager but is not working, use the computer manufacturer’s support page for your exact model to find the appropriate Ethernet driver. Avoid installing a driver for a different model. If the problem started after a Windows or driver update, note when it began and follow the manufacturer’s model-specific guidance.

ASUS describes uninstalling the adapter in Device Manager and scanning for hardware changes; Dell describes uninstalling it and restarting Windows so it can reinstall. Before uninstalling, make sure you can get the correct driver or regain internet access another way if Windows does not restore the adapter automatically.
Save network reset for later
Try a Windows network reset only after checking the cable, ports, adapter, and driver. A reset changes network configuration and restarts the PC, so it has broader effects than reseating a cable or switching ports. ASUS and Dell include reset steps as later troubleshooting options; follow the instructions for your Windows version and note any network settings you may need to restore.

When a USB-to-Ethernet adapter may help
A USB-to-Ethernet adapter is a conditional way to test or work around a computer’s built-in Ethernet port—for example, if the computer has no Ethernet jack or the built-in port is suspected to be faulty. Check that the adapter’s USB connector fits your computer and that it supports your version of Windows. It will not fix a faulty router or network cable, and it does not by itself resolve a driver problem affecting the external adapter.
When to seek hardware support
If the same computer still shows no link with a known-good cable and a known-good router or switch port, the computer’s Ethernet jack, adapter, dock, or USB Ethernet device may need service or replacement. That result points toward the PC-side connection but does not prove which part has failed. If the adapter is absent in Device Manager, check whether it is disabled and whether the correct driver is installed; for onboard Ethernet, Dell also recommends checking the BIOS LAN setting.
For persistent model-specific driver or adapter problems, consult the computer manufacturer’s support guidance or a qualified repair service.
