Document Picture-in-Picture (Document PiP) lets a web app open a small, always-on-top browser window containing arbitrary HTML—not just video. That makes it a fit for a floating mini-timer that remains visible while someone works in another tab or application. The API is not available in every browser, so keep an in-page timer as a fallback.
Document PiP versus classic video Picture-in-Picture
Classic Picture-in-Picture is focused on displaying video. Document PiP instead gives the app a separate browsing context whose document can contain a timer interface and other HTML. Choose Document PiP when the floating view needs custom markup and controls; use video PiP when the content is video and the classic API meets the need. Either approach depends on support for its particular API in the user’s browser.
| Approach | Content | Controls and interface |
|---|---|---|
| Document Picture-in-Picture | Arbitrary HTML, including a timer UI | The app renders and styles its own interface |
| Classic Picture-in-Picture | Video-focused | Designed around video rather than an arbitrary HTML interface |
Check support and provide an in-page fallback
MDN classifies Document PiP as limited availability and not Baseline. It is restricted to secure contexts in supporting browsers. Feature-detect window.documentPictureInPicture before enabling the floating-window control; when it is absent, leave the ordinary in-page timer usable. MDN’s API references do not establish a complete browser-and-version support matrix, so verify the exact target browsers before publishing version-specific compatibility claims. MDN: Document Picture-in-Picture API.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Open the floating timer from a user action
The API is exposed as window.documentPictureInPicture. Call its requestWindow() method in direct response to an action such as a button click. The call requires transient user activation, so defer it until after unrelated asynchronous work and it may fail if that activation is no longer available. It is limited to a top-level browsing context and cannot be called from within the PiP window itself. On success, the returned promise resolves with the new window’s Window object.

- Check for
window.documentPictureInPictureand enable the floating-timer control only when the API exists. - In the control’s click handler, call
window.documentPictureInPicture.requestWindow()directly. - When the promise resolves, use the returned window’s document to render the timer UI and apply styles for that document.
The interface also exposes an enter event for successful programmatic openings. See MDN: DocumentPictureInPicture and MDN: requestWindow() for the API details.
Render a compact interface in the PiP document
The floating window has its own document context. Create or append the timer elements there rather than assuming the opener’s page markup or styles will automatically define the PiP interface. Give the floating view explicit, compact styling and include only the controls and status the user needs while working elsewhere.

Keep timer state coordinated between the opener and the PiP UI. One practical design is to make the main page the source of timer state and update the floating display from it. This is implementation guidance, not a synchronization behavior guaranteed by the API.
Handle closure and browser-managed limits
The browser controls important aspects of the PiP experience. A website cannot choose the window’s screen position, navigate it, or keep it alive after its opener closes. A tab can have only one Document PiP window at a time, and browsers may impose further restrictions. Avoid promising a particular corner, persistence after the source page closes, or unrestricted availability.

The main page can continue to own timer state, but the exact lifecycle handling and UI response are choices for the app rather than prescribed timer behavior.
