No. If the apps you need work, there is no general reason to disable Smart App Control. It is an additional Windows 11 protection that can block apps it considers malicious or potentially unwanted, as well as apps whose safety cannot be confidently established and that lack a valid signature. If it blocks a legitimate app you need, check for a signed version from its developer before deciding whether to turn the feature off.
What Smart App Control does
Smart App Control uses a cloud-powered service to assess whether apps are safe. If it cannot make a confident prediction, Windows checks whether the app has a valid signature. An unsigned app or one with an invalid signature may be treated as untrusted and blocked. A block does not, by itself, prove an app is malware: the feature can also block potentially unwanted apps or apps it cannot verify as safe.
Microsoft describes Smart App Control as working alongside Microsoft Defender and other antivirus tools, not replacing them. Having another antivirus installed is not, on its own, a reason to treat this protection as redundant. See Microsoft’s Smart App Control FAQ.
Should you turn it off?
Base the decision on the app and the trade-off, not on a general need to disable the feature. If your required apps run, leaving Smart App Control on preserves this additional check. If it blocks a legitimate app you depend on, first confirm that you obtained it from the developer and ask whether the developer offers a properly signed version. If no signed version is available, weigh the app’s importance against losing this protection layer. That is a practical choice, not a universal instruction from Microsoft.

What to do when a needed app is blocked
Check the app’s source and signature
Make sure you downloaded the app from its developer or another source you trust. Contact the developer to ask whether a version with a valid signature is available. A signature can help Windows establish the app’s publisher and integrity, but it is not a guarantee that an app is harmless.
Know the limit: no per-app allow option
Microsoft says there is currently no way to bypass Smart App Control for an individual app. The options it describes are to use a properly signed version if the developer provides one, or turn Smart App Control off. Disabling it means the feature will no longer notify you about untrusted apps.

How to check its status in Windows Security
- Open Windows Security.
- Select App & browser control.
- Open Smart App Control settings and check whether the setting is Evaluation, On, or Off.
Microsoft’s App & browser control overview describes Evaluation as a period when Windows determines whether the feature is suitable for the device; it does not block apps in that state. On applies the protection, while Off means Smart App Control does not notify you about untrusted apps.

Turning it back on is not the same as restoring Evaluation
Microsoft’s FAQ says recent Windows updates allow Smart App Control to be enabled again without a clean installation. Its settings overview also says that after Evaluation ends or a user manually changes the setting, returning to Evaluation requires reinstalling or resetting Windows. These describe different outcomes: re-enabling the protection is not the same as putting the device back into Evaluation. Availability and behavior can vary with the device and Windows build, so do not assume every PC has identical options.
