To record 4K on an iPhone, open Camera, select Video, then tap the resolution and frame-rate labels on screen and choose an available 4K option. To set the recording format before opening Camera, go to Settings > Camera > Record Video. Which resolutions and frame rates appear depends on your iPhone model.
Choose 4K in the Camera app

Open the Camera app and swipe to Video.

Tap the resolution and frame-rate values displayed on the screen. Depending on the model and current mode, these may appear as labels such as “HD” or “4K” and “30” or “60.”

Select an available 4K option and the frame rate you want. If 4K is not shown, check the options for your iPhone in Settings as described below; available formats vary by model.

Start recording. The selected resolution and frame rate are shown in the Camera interface.

Apple’s iPhone User Guide says that supported frame rates may include 24, 25, 30, 60, and 120 fps, depending on the iPhone. Those rates are not all available at 4K on every model. Use the choices displayed on your phone rather than assuming a particular combination is supported.
Set or check the default recording quality
Open Settings > Camera > Record Video. This screen lists the recording formats available on your device; choose the resolution and frame rate you want as the default. The same settings can be changed from the Camera app while in Video mode, where the resolution and frame-rate values are displayed.
If a particular format is missing, it is not necessarily a setting you have overlooked: supported options depend on the iPhone model. Apple’s recording guide describes the available controls, but the options on your own phone are the definitive check for that device.

Choose a frame rate for your recording
Frame rate is the number of frames captured each second. Apple documents options ranging from 24 to 120 fps on supported iPhones, but the available rates depend on the model and selected format.

24, 25, or 30 fps: Choose among these when you do not need a higher capture rate. Which of them appears depends on your phone and recording setup.

60 fps: Select it when you want to capture at a higher frame rate and the option is available at your chosen resolution.

120 fps: This is available only on supported models and formats. Higher-frame-rate footage can be played more slowly in Photos, according to Apple.

There is no single best frame rate for every clip. Consider whether you want a conventional recording choice, higher-frame-rate capture, or the ability to play footage more slowly later. Higher frame rates and higher resolutions also create larger files, as Apple notes in its iPhone User Guide.
Adjust related video controls separately
Resolution and frame rate are not the only settings that affect recording. Some options are model-dependent or apply only to particular camera modes. Find the available controls in Settings > Camera > Record Video or in the relevant Camera mode.

Auto FPS and low light
On supported models, Auto FPS can automatically lower the frame rate to 24 fps in low-light situations. If you need a particular frame rate to remain fixed, review this setting. See Apple’s guide to recording video for the supported controls.
HDR video
On supported iPhones, HDR video can be turned off under Settings > Camera > Record Video. HDR is a separate choice from selecting 4K, so check it independently if you are adjusting how a video is recorded.

Enhanced Stabilization and Lock Camera are model-dependent controls. Apple says Enhanced Stabilization applies a slight zoom to improve stabilization. Check the options on your iPhone before recording if these controls matter to the shot.

Cinematic and Slo-mo
Cinematic and Slo-mo are separate Camera modes with their own controls. Do not assume that the resolution and frame-rate choices available in ordinary Video mode also apply to them; check the controls shown in the mode you plan to use.

Higher resolution and faster frame rates use more storage. If you are choosing between formats, consider how much space is available on your iPhone and how you plan to keep or transfer the footage. Apple does not provide a single file-size-per-minute figure for all iPhone models and recording settings in the cited guide.
ProRes is a separate recording format, not a requirement for ordinary 4K video. It can produce much larger files: Apple says ProRes files can be up to 30 times larger than HEVC files. Apple also says at least 10 percent of the device’s storage must be free to record ProRes. These figures apply to ProRes, not to every 4K recording. Some ProRes recording setups on supported iPhone Pro models can use external storage. Apple’s ProRes guidance specifies requirements for particular 4K ProRes frame rates and workflows. Check your exact iPhone model and intended ProRes format before relying on an external drive. External storage requirements for those workflows do not apply to ordinary 4K recording.
Keep capture settings separate from editing and export
Changing a project’s export resolution does not change the resolution of the original footage. Apple says iMovie can work with 4K footage when a project contains at least one clip originally recorded in 4K. Its guide describes 4K UHD export at 3840 × 2160 and 30 fps for the platforms it covers. See Apple’s iMovie User Guide for the editing and export details.
