A digital offset color press creates print images from digital data and uses an offset-style transfer stage. The term does not describe one universal machine: HP uses it for its Indigo liquid electrophotographic (LEP) process, while Presstek uses “digital offset” for presses that image offset plates on press.

What “digital offset” means

In conventional offset printing, an inked image transfers from a plate to a rubber blanket, then from the blanket to the material being printed. “Digital offset” combines digital image creation or plate imaging with an offset press’s transfer approach, but manufacturers use the phrase for different mechanisms.

HP’s Indigo process is one example. A 2002 technical paper by Udi Chatow of HP’s Indigo Division describes the printed image as created directly from digital data and notes the use of an offset cylinder and blanket. Read the paper.

How HP Indigo LEP transfers an image

  1. Digital data forms the color separations on a reusable Photo Imaging Plate (PIP).
  2. Each separation transfers from the PIP to a heated blanket.
  3. Heat melts and blends pigment-bearing particles in ElectroInk into a film on the blanket.
  4. The film contacts the cooler substrate and solidifies on it.

This imaging-plate-to-blanket-to-substrate path is why the process is described as offset-style, even though the image is formed digitally rather than carried as a conventional inked image on an off-press plate. HP’s explanation of Indigo technology and its use of “digital offset” is available in its digital offset printing overview.

Benchtop Drill Press with Laser & Digital Meter, Variable Speed
  • Built-in laser positioning system projects clear cross alignment lines to mark drilling positions accurately, removing tedious manual layout work and avoiding offset holes for reliable precision in wood and metal drilling.
  • Features continuously variable speed adjustable between 450 and 3150 RPM to meet all drilling demands for wood and various metals. Built-in digital speed readout shows real-time rotation speed for precise control.
  • Powerful motor delivers steady, ample torque to effortlessly drill through a wide range of materials including all types of wood, aluminum, steel, and other metals, preventing stalling during heavy-duty tasks.
  • Sturdy metal worktable features a wide tilting range of 45 degrees on both left and right sides. Lock the table securely at any desired angle for angled drilling, chamfering, and offset hole processing.

How Presstek DI differs

Presstek uses “digital offset” for direct imaging (DI). In this workflow, ripped files go to the press, where the press images offset plates on press. Presstek describes the method as combining laser imaging, thermal digital media, and press design, and characterizes its approach as waterless printing. That is not the same transfer mechanism as Indigo LEP: DI images offset plates, whereas Indigo forms digital image separations and transfers ElectroInk through a heated blanket.

Presstek’s digital offset overview describes its DI approach. The term alone is therefore not enough to identify a press’s imaging system; check the manufacturer and model.

What the distinction means when choosing a process

  • Image formation: Indigo uses digital electrophotographic imaging; Presstek DI writes images onto offset plates on press.
  • Transfer path: Indigo transfers ink-bearing material from its imaging plate to a blanket and then the substrate. DI uses imaged offset plates; the reviewed Presstek overview does not give a neutral, quantified comparison of transfer performance.
  • Prepress and make-ready: Both examples have a digital workflow, but the available sources do not establish a general setup-time or setup-cost advantage.
  • Changing content: Chatow’s 2002 paper describes Indigo as allowing image variation from copy to copy. That can be relevant to variable content, but it does not establish a universal break-even run length or cost advantage.
  • Materials: HP lists paper, film, shrink film, label stock, and pre-laminates for its Indigo portfolio. Presstek describes paper and packaging stocks for DI systems. Actual compatibility depends on press model and material specifications; verify thickness, surface, and other limits in the documentation for the specific press.

What is—and is not—established about performance

HP says it unveiled the world’s first digital offset color printing press in 1993; that is HP’s historical claim, not an independently verified industry-wide finding. The manufacturer material and 2002 technical paper cited here explain the term and processes, but do not establish a neutral current comparison of cost, speed, quality, or market size. Those outcomes should not be inferred from the label “digital offset” or generalized across models.
