There is no universal list of appliances that must never be connected to every smart plug. The safe answer depends on the plug’s exact electrical rating and instructions, as well as the appliance’s requirements. Never exceed the smart plug’s rated load. Take particular care with heaters, appliances with motors, equipment that needs uninterrupted power, medical or life-support equipment, and power strips.

Start with the smart plug’s rating and instructions

Check the plug’s specified maximum current and wattage, then compare them with the appliance’s requirements. TP-Link says not to connect an appliance whose power exceeds the smart plug’s maximum load; exceeding it can create a safety hazard. A higher-rated plug is not automatically suitable for every appliance: the appliance manual and the smart plug’s restrictions still matter. TP-Link’s load guidance is specific to its products and should not be treated as a rating for other models.

Confirm that the plug is designed for your region’s voltage and outlet type. A listed wattage or current is meaningful only when the product is used within its stated electrical and regional limits.

Which devices need extra caution?

Space heaters and other heating appliances

Heating appliances can draw substantial power, so compare their requirements with the smart plug’s exact rating and follow both manuals. TP-Link lists space heaters, hair dryers, toasters, kettles, and irons among high-power appliances to use cautiously with its smart plugs. That is a caution, not proof that every such appliance is prohibited on every smart plug. TP-Link’s guidance and the individual product instructions determine the applicable limits.

Some products impose a specific prohibition. Zooz says not to use its ZEN04 plug to control electric heaters or other appliances that could cause fire, burns, or electrical shock when unattended. Do not apply that ZEN04 instruction to every smart plug, but do follow it if you own that model. Zooz ZEN04 manual

Appliances with motors

A motor’s running wattage may not capture the current it draws when starting. TP-Link warns that inductive loads can have higher startup current, and gives air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, fans, water pumps, and vacuum cleaners as examples. Check the appliance and smart plug instructions for compatibility rather than judging by running power alone. TP-Link’s explanation of inductive loads

Refrigerators and equipment that needs constant power

Here the issue is not just electrical load: turning the plug off can interrupt power to something intended to stay on. Panasonic advises against connecting a refrigerator or another device requiring constant power to the plug addressed in its FAQ. This is a product-specific warning, not a universal statement about every smart plug and refrigerator. If an appliance must remain powered, do not use a smart plug to switch it unless both manufacturers’ instructions explicitly support that use. Panasonic FAQ

Medical and life-support equipment

Amazon’s safety instructions say its Smart Plug should not supply power to or control the on/off status of medical or life-support equipment. Treat that as an explicit restriction for Amazon Smart Plug; check the exact product’s instructions for other devices instead of assuming the same wording applies to all models. Power strips and extension arrangements

Do not plug a power strip into an Amazon Smart Plug: Amazon’s safety guidance prohibits that arrangement. TP-Link also cautions against using power strips with its products. Follow the instructions for the exact plug, and do not assume that another model permits a strip or extension. Amazon safety instructions; TP-Link Türkiye guidance

Check both manuals before connecting an appliance

  1. Identify the exact smart plug model. Read its label and manual for maximum current and wattage, regional compatibility, and any restrictions on appliance types, unattended operation, extensions, or power strips.
  2. Check the appliance’s requirements. Use its label and instructions to identify the electrical load and whether it requires continuous power or has restrictions on remote switching.
  3. Account for startup current. For a motor-driven appliance, do not assume its running wattage is the whole story; confirm the plug is suitable for that load under the manufacturers’ instructions.
  4. Do not use the connection if a limit or prohibition applies. If the appliance exceeds the plug’s rating, either manual rules out the setup, or compatibility is unclear, leave it disconnected and seek guidance from the manufacturers.

TP-Link Türkiye’s guidance gives a heater example of 10 A / 2300 W, but that figure is an example in its stated product context—not a universal smart plug rating. Check the rating printed on your own device. TP-Link Türkiye: connected-load guidance

Can I plug a refrigerator into a smart plug?

Only if the specific smart plug and refrigerator instructions support it, and the plug can handle the load, including any relevant startup current. Panasonic advises against using the plug covered in its FAQ for a refrigerator or another device requiring constant power. If switching off the refrigerator would interrupt power it needs, do not put it on a remotely controlled plug. Panasonic’s FAQ

What loads can be connected to a Tapo/Kasa plug?

Use the rating and restrictions for the exact Tapo or Kasa model and market. TP-Link Türkiye’s guidance discusses load types and gives examples, but its heater example does not establish a universal limit for all smart plugs. The U.S. guidance separately flags high-power and inductive loads for caution. Neither set of examples should be read as a blanket approval or ban for every appliance.
