A mute LED that stays dark on Linux does not necessarily mean the audio or microphone is still live. On some laptops, the indicator needs a model-specific ALSA driver quirk; Linux kernel changelogs document such fixes for several HP Victus models using the Realtek ALC245 codec. Those records are useful clues, not a universal fix—and they do not establish that the Reddit workaround or kernel patch in the headline refers to the same machines.

What a dark mute LED does—and does not—tell you

The mute indicator and the mute function are related but distinct. An audio control can mute sound while its LED remains off if the hardware-specific signaling that drives the indicator is not configured correctly. Conversely, a lit indicator alone is not proof that every audio path is muted. Check the actual mute state in your desktop’s sound controls or application rather than relying only on the light.

Linux kernel changelog entries provide a concrete example of the indicator-side problem: some HP Victus laptops use a Realtek ALC245 codec but require a driver quirk for the mute LED. A quirk is a model- or board-specific driver setting that handles hardware behavior not covered correctly by the default configuration.

What the documented HP Victus fixes cover

The relevant changelog records describe separate, narrowly scoped changes in the ALSA HDA Realtek driver. They should not be read as a general Linux mute-LED command or as proof that every Victus—or every ALC245 laptop—has the same issue.

Kernel changelog Named hardware Recorded change and evidence
Linux 6.15.4, June 9, 2025 HP Victus 16-s1xxx and HP Victus 15-fa1xxx; Realtek ALC245 Enabled an existing mute-LED quirk. The entry reports tests on a Victus 16-s1011nt and a Victus 15-fa1xxx.
Linux 6.16.1, July 2025 HP Victus 16-d1xxx with board ID 8A26, 16-r1xxx, and 16-s0xxx; Realtek ALC245 Separate entries enable or correct model-specific mute-LED quirks. The entries are dated July 25 and July 29.

The changelog test notes are reports attached to those changes, not independent verification and not tests of every configuration. A family name by itself is not enough to establish that a quirk applies: the records distinguish subfamilies, and one specifically names board ID 8A26.

How to check whether one of these fixes may apply

  1. Identify the exact laptop model. Use the model designation shown by the manufacturer or system information, not just “Victus” or the screen size. Compare the full suffix with the models named in the changelog.
  2. Check the board ID if the record calls for it. The 16-d1xxx entry specifies board ID 8A26; a different board should not be assumed to match.
  3. Identify the audio codec. The cited fixes concern the Realtek ALC245. A different codec points to a different hardware and driver case.
  4. Check the running kernel version. A changelog documents a change in a kernel release, but Linux distributions choose and package kernels on their own schedules. The installed release number alone does not show whether a distribution included, backported, or otherwise changed a fix.
  5. Separate indicator behavior from mute behavior. Confirm whether audio or microphone mute actually works using the system’s controls. If muting works but the LED does not respond, that is consistent with an indicator-configuration issue, though it does not prove the cause.

Why a Reddit workaround is not automatically the right fix

A workaround can be useful evidence that a particular machine has a driver-configuration problem, but its relevance depends on the exact laptop, board, codec, and kernel it addressed. The available DEV Community result confirms a matching headline by Krish Gulati and the Linux, kernel, and ALSA tags, but it does not expose the article body or verify its Reddit post, laptop model, or patch. The HP Victus changelog entries are related technical evidence; they do not establish that they are the patch described in that story.

Do not apply a kernel parameter, driver override, or arbitrary kernel installation just because it appears to solve a similar symptom on another machine. The evidence here does not provide a verified, model-specific installation procedure. Prefer a fix documented for the exact hardware through your distribution’s supported kernel updates or support channels.

When the Victus changelog entries are not a match

If the laptop is not one of the named configurations, or its codec and board do not match, these records cannot identify the cause of its dark LED. The symptom could still involve driver support or hardware behavior, but the cited changelogs do not establish a fix for other models. Keep the mute state verified in software, record the exact hardware and kernel details, and look for documentation specific to that combination rather than treating ALC245 or HP branding as sufficient proof.
