Samsung’s “Zip apps” or S Zip feature archives selected apps to free storage; it is not a general-purpose ZIP file tool. On devices that include it, archived apps stop sending notifications and can be restored from a zipped-apps list or archive folder. The feature and its menu location vary, and the available guidance does not establish support on current Galaxy models.
What “zipping apps” does on a Samsung phone
Samsung’s legacy Storage Saver feature archives an installed app. Samsung’s Storage Saver listing says zipped apps will not send notifications and can be restored, with user data, by unzipping them from the zipped folder or list. A 2018 Samsung Members discussion describes the apps as internally uninstalled, with their zipped files placed in an Archive folder.
This is different from compressing documents or photos into a ZIP archive. A third-party file-archive app, for example, handles files rather than archiving installed apps; it does not provide the same function.
How to find and use Zip apps
- Search your Galaxy phone’s Settings and app list for “Storage Saver,” “Zip apps,” or “S Zip.” There is no verified universal path for current Galaxy software.
- If the feature appears, open it and select only apps you can do without until you restore them. You will not receive notifications from apps while they are zipped, according to Samsung’s Storage Saver listing.
- Back up important app information before archiving. Samsung’s listing says restoration can include user data, but a 2018 Samsung Members discussion warns that app data may be cleared during the ZIP process. These older sources do not establish a data-retention guarantee for your model.
- To use an archived app again, look for it in the zipped-apps list or Archive folder and choose the available restore or unzip option. The exact label may differ by device.
Where the option may be on older Galaxy software
A Samsung Members response posted January 16, 2018, gives this legacy route: Apps → Smart Manager/device maintenance → Storage → Zip apps. The wording and menus depend on the device and software version; treat this as a lead for older interfaces, not a current step-by-step path guaranteed to work on every Galaxy phone.

Why Zip apps may be missing
The available Samsung community instructions date to 2018, and the Storage Saver app listing was last updated March 24, 2020. Those sources do not identify which current Galaxy models, regions, or software versions include S Zip. If searching Settings and the app list does not find it, the feature may not be available on your phone or may be located elsewhere. Check Samsung support for your exact model and software version rather than assuming every Samsung phone supports app zipping.

What to know before archiving apps
- Notifications pause: Samsung says zipped apps do not send notifications while archived.
- Data retention is not assured: Samsung’s listing describes restoration with user data, while an older community response warns data can be cleared. Back up information you cannot afford to lose.
- Storage savings are not quantified: The available sources give no compression ratio or fixed amount of space freed. The result depends on the app and device, and should not be assumed to be a particular percentage.
- It is not the same as deleting selectively or clearing cache: S Zip archives apps; the sources here do not establish that it behaves like other storage-management methods.
