A keycap is the removable top piece attached to a keyboard switch—the part your finger presses. To choose replacements, check that the set matches your switch stems, keyboard layout, key sizes, and stabilizers first; then compare material, legend construction, profile, and appearance. A set described as “MX-compatible” may still omit the unusual keys your keyboard needs.
What a keycap does
Keycaps sit on keyboard switches and provide the surface, shape, and markings you interact with while typing. Replacing them can change a keyboard’s appearance and feel, but the new caps must match the board’s physical requirements. Compatibility is about more than whether a cap can attach to a switch.
Check compatibility before choosing a material or color
Match the switch stem
Check the stem type on your switches and the compatibility stated for the keycap set. Many sets are made for MX-style stems, but that alone does not establish that every cap in the set fits every keyboard. CORSAIR says its keycaps can be used on non-CORSAIR keyboards when they have a standard bottom row, MX-stem switches, and MX-style stabilizers. That guidance applies to CORSAIR’s set, not every product.

Compare your keyboard’s layout with the layouts the set explicitly supports. Look closely at the bottom row, spacebar, modifier keys, and any nonstandard or unusually sized keys. Keychron says standard MX-style keycaps fit its K2, which uses OEM-profile caps, but cautions that some third-party sets may not include all the required key sizes. The practical lesson is to check the set’s included sizes as well as its stem compatibility.

Check stabilizer requirements
Larger keys, such as the spacebar, use stabilizers on many keyboards. Verify that the replacement set supports the stabilizer arrangement your board uses; a statement about fitting MX-style switch stems does not necessarily confirm that every stabilized key is covered.
Use the product listing, not a broad compatibility claim
As one product-specific example, Razer describes its PBT Keycap Upgrade Set as containing 120 keycaps for either a US 104-key or UK 105-key layout, with compatibility for its own keyboards and Cherry-style switches. That coverage does not guarantee a fit for compact, split, nonstandard, or other regional layouts. Confirm the exact kit contents against your keyboard before ordering.

Compare materials and construction
PBT and ABS
PBT and ABS are common keycap plastics. Their typical finish, texture, and wall thickness can differ, but the material label alone does not establish overall quality. NZXT’s compatibility guide compares common material characteristics; use a product’s actual specifications and construction details rather than assuming one plastic is always better.

Double-shot keycaps are made by molding the legend and the surrounding cap body as separate pieces of plastic. CORSAIR describes this construction as supporting clear fonts and longer-lasting legends. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent comparative test results.

If you want keyboard lighting to shine through the letters, check whether the legends are translucent. Double-shot construction by itself does not tell you whether the legends let light through: that depends on the design and product. Razer specifies translucent legends on its cited set, but check the specification for whichever set you are considering.
Choose a profile that suits your preference
Profile refers to the shape and height of keycaps, including how their rows are shaped. OEM, Cherry, SA, and DSA are among the profile names used for keycaps. A profile similar to the caps already on your keyboard is a sensible starting point if you are unsure, but it is a preference-based suggestion, not a proven comfort ranking. The available product and support information does not establish one profile as best for everyone.

Keychron identifies OEM as the stock profile on its K2 and says normal MX-style caps fit, while still advising users to check key sizes. That example illustrates the difference between profile and compatibility: profile describes shape, whereas stem type, layout coverage, and key dimensions determine whether the replacements fit.
Pre-purchase fit checklist
- Identify the switch stem type and confirm that the set explicitly supports it.
- Match your keyboard’s layout and region to the set’s stated coverage.
- Check the sizes and shapes of the bottom-row keys, spacebar, modifiers, and other unusual keys.
- Confirm stabilizer compatibility for larger keys where relevant.
- Choose PBT or ABS based on the product’s specified finish and construction, not an assumed universal quality ranking.
- If lighting matters, verify that the legends are translucent and that the product is designed for your lighting needs.
- Choose a profile based on your preference; consider your current caps as a reference rather than treating any profile as universally superior.
Removing or replacing keycaps
For removal, use a keycap puller where appropriate and follow your keyboard maker’s instructions. Avoid assuming that every key should be removed or handled the same way; check the keyboard’s guidance, particularly for larger stabilized keys.
