Learn C++ fundamentals first, then build data structures and algorithms skills by implementing concepts and solving problems as you go. There is no single required sequence: university courses arrange topics differently, so use your own course syllabus and current fluency to decide what comes next.

Build a working foundation in C++

Start with the language tools needed to write small, complete programs: data types, assignment, input and output, conditionals, loops, and functions. Practice turning a problem into steps, expressing those steps in code, compiling, and correcting errors. The University of Bologna’s 2026/2027 programming course outline groups these fundamentals with algorithms and programs, then proceeds to recursion, vectors, memory allocation, dynamic data structures, and object-oriented topics. Bologna’s course catalog is one example of a progression, not a universal prerequisite list.

Learn classes and memory management in context

Once basic programs and functions feel manageable, study data abstraction and classes, then pointers, dynamic arrays, and resource management. These topics help explain how data is represented and managed as programs grow. They also make later work with linked structures easier to reason about. A CSE curriculum may introduce object-oriented programming before, alongside, or after some DSA topics; follow the order and prerequisites of your own course rather than treating one sequence as mandatory.

Add data structures and algorithms in a usable sequence

After the fundamentals, learn structures by asking what problem each one helps solve, how its operations work, and what trade-offs those operations create. A representative sequence appears in UCLA CS 32’s Winter 2026 syllabus. It moves through C++ review, abstraction and classes, pointers and resource management, linked lists, stacks and queues, inheritance and polymorphism, recursion, templates and iterators, the STL, algorithmic efficiency and sorting, trees, hash tables, priority queues and heaps, and graphs.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use that sequence as a map of possible topics, not a rule that every student must follow exactly. Stanford CS106B also brings C++ together with recursion, algorithm analysis, data abstraction, classic structures and algorithms, and applying those ideas to problems. The overlap points to a useful principle: learn concepts and practice applying them, while adapting the order to your course.

Connect each concept to code and problems

  • Write a small program that uses the idea, rather than stopping after reading its definition.
  • Implement a structure or algorithm when that helps you understand its operations; also learn to use standard-library tools where appropriate.
  • Work on problems that exercise the concept, then review whether your approach is correct and understandable.
  • Use written exercises or a small project to combine concepts. Bologna’s course assessment includes programming exercises and a project, while Stanford describes applying techniques to problems.

There is no evidence-based daily problem count or guaranteed number of hours that fits every student. Aim for a repeatable loop: study one concept, code it, test it with representative cases, and solve problems that make you choose when and how to use it.

Choose the next topic from your course and your gaps

Use your CSE course syllabus and listed prerequisites as your local guide. If you can write basic programs but struggle to trace recursive calls, spend time on recursion before pushing further into trees or graph algorithms. If your course is introducing algorithm analysis, learn to reason about efficiency as you study sorting and data structures rather than postponing it indefinitely. UCLA places efficiency and sorting before later structures in its example sequence, and Stanford explicitly includes algorithm analysis.

When a C++ or standard-library detail blocks you, consult a reference for that specific question. The Illinois CS 225 syllabus points students to cppreference. A reference is useful for checking language behavior or library interfaces, but it does not replace structured instruction and problem practice.

Pick resources that match what you need

You do not need to buy a book to begin. University syllabi and course materials offer structure, and Runestone’s Problem Solving with Algorithms and Data Structures using C++ begins with problem solving and C++ basics before moving into the subject.

If a physical textbook would help you follow a structured path, Pearson’s Introduction to C++ Programming and Data Structures, fifth edition, by Y. Daniel Liang, is described by the publisher as a fundamentals-first, problem-driven introduction for introductory computer science courses. UCLA also lists C++ data-structures books as textbook options. Treat a book as an optional guide, not a required purchase.
