You can build a PC game library without paying for every title by using two different kinds of storefront offers: free-to-play games, which are listed as free on an ongoing basis, and limited-time giveaways, which you must claim before their deadlines. Epic Games Store says it offers a new free game each week, and a game claimed there stays in the account library after the offer ends. That can create a substantial backlog, but the specific $1,000 figure is a family calculation—not a verified savings statistic—and should be tied to a named game list and a consistent price basis.
How can my teen play PC games for free?
Start with the kind of offer, not a specific game. Free-to-play titles and timed giveaways can both add games to a library without an upfront purchase, but they work differently. The Epic Games Store presents both a free-to-play catalog and a separate set of rotating giveaways; Steam also has a free-to-play category.

Epic’s Free Games page is the place to check its live giveaway and free-to-play listings. The weekly cadence is Epic’s program description, not a promise that a particular title will be available on a given day; the lineup and deadlines can change.

Yes, according to the Epic Games Store FAQ: “When you claim a free game, it remains in your library to play – even after the game is no longer available to new customers for free.” The game must be claimed during the offer window, and the claim needs to be made on the account your teen will use.

If a claimed title is missing, Epic says account mix-ups can be a reason. Check that the launcher or website is signed into the same account used to claim the game, including whether the account is linked to another sign-in method. Epic’s library troubleshooting guidance covers further checks.
What does “free” include—and what might still cost money?
A free-to-play label describes access to the base game; it does not mean every item, service, or add-on is free. Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes in-game revenue as one way free-to-play games may earn money. That does not establish that a particular purchase is required: review the individual game’s listing and discuss spending expectations before play.

A giveaway is different: it makes a specific paid game available to claim for free during a limited period. Do not treat a storefront’s listed price as money your family saved unless you explain the comparison. A total such as $1,000 depends on which games are counted and whether their value uses current list prices, historical prices, or another consistent basis. Without that game list and method, the figure is an anecdotal estimate, not an independently verified savings amount.

- Choose the account first. Use a storefront account that complies with its age and regional rules. Avoid claiming games on a parent’s account if the goal is for the teen to access them through a separate account.
- Open the storefront’s official free-games page. On Epic, visit Free Games and check the live title and claim deadline. Do not rely on an old list or assume a particular game is still free.
- Claim before the deadline. Follow the offer page’s claim flow while the promotion is active, and confirm the transaction or claim is associated with the intended account.
- Verify the library entry. Sign into the same account in the launcher or on the web and check that the title appears in its library. If it does not, use the account and library checks in Epic’s troubleshooting guide.
- Browse free-to-play catalogs separately. Use Epic’s catalog or Steam’s Free to Play category for games not dependent on a rotating giveaway. Check each title’s page to distinguish an ongoing free-to-play listing from a trial or other temporary promotion.
- Check compatibility before installing. Look at the game’s own product page for its operating-system support and PC requirements. The platform-wide catalogs do not establish whether a particular family computer can run a specific game.
What parents should check on a teen’s account
Age, region, and consent
Epic says accounts for players under 13 or below the local age of digital consent may be Cabined Accounts. Depending on the applicable rules and whether parental consent has been provided, features such as chat, purchases, and acquiring new games can be restricted. Epic’s Cabined Accounts FAQ explains the conditions and limitations. Check the account’s actual status rather than assuming that every teen account has the same features.

Purchases, chat, and security
Before a teen starts playing, review the storefront’s parental controls and the device’s own family settings. Epic recommends using device-level controls alongside its account-level controls. Agree on whether in-game purchases are allowed, check chat and other social settings, and secure the account with a unique password and multifactor authentication, as Epic advises in its Epic Games Store FAQ.

A family can reasonably describe a collection as having a nominal value, but the number needs its method. List the games included and state whether you used each title’s current list price, a price from the date it was claimed, or another basis. Then distinguish that paper value from actual cash saved: a free claim does not prove the family would otherwise have bought the game at that price.

The official store information supports the mechanics of free-to-play listings, rotating giveaways, and post-claim library retention. It does not verify any particular family’s game inventory, the value assigned to it, or whether a computer can run every title in it. Treat the $1,000 as a family-specific estimate only when the games and calculation are available to support it.
