Latency matters when choosing a game-server location, but it does not decide the choice on its own. A reliable decision combines measurements from players to candidate locations with matchmaking needs, available server capacity, hosting architecture, and the computing resources each session requires. A cloud provider’s regional latency figure—or a single ping test—cannot tell every player what their in-game delay will be.
What latency means for a game server
Latency is the delay along a particular network path. Microsoft defines round-trip latency as the time a packet takes to travel from one point in a network to another and back. For a player, the meaningful path is usually from the player’s device to the game server and back, not simply between two cloud regions.
That distinction matters when reading provider statistics. Microsoft’s Azure regional latency page reports median (P50) round-trip measurements between Azure regions, based on continuous probes sampled at one-minute intervals. Its dataset covers the 30 days ending July 30, 2026, and the page metadata lists an August 20, 2026 update. These are Azure infrastructure measurements, not home-to-server measurements or guarantees for an individual game session. Microsoft also notes that latency can differ by direction between a pair of regions. Read Microsoft’s Azure network latency documentation.

AWS recommends UDP ping beacons for measuring game-server location latency because most game servers use UDP and network devices may handle ICMP differently. Does ping decide which game server you connect to?
Ping can help rank candidate regions and inform matchmaking, but it is one input in a larger allocation decision. Microsoft recommends client-device network QoS measurements as the primary factor for ranking preferred allocation regions in PlayFab. “Primary” does not mean “only”: a region must also be able to host the session, and the match may need to satisfy other game-specific rules. Microsoft’s PlayFab allocation guidance.
Matchmaking also has to account for the group of players, not just one player’s best result. If players are spread across different locations, selecting a region that gives one person the lowest delay may leave others with a worse connection. Microsoft describes QoS checks as an important matchmaking component, while the game’s own rules determine how connection quality is balanced against other requirements. See Microsoft’s PlayFab matchmaking documentation.

Why a closer server may not mean lower latency
Physical distance is only one part of the route. Traffic can follow different network paths, and infrastructure latency readings do not reproduce the route from a player’s ISP, home network, and device to a live game server. A nearby location can therefore produce a worse measured path than a farther candidate. The useful comparison is measured player-to-location performance using a method representative of game traffic, not a map-distance estimate.
There is no universal “good ping” threshold established by the cited sources for every game or genre. What feels acceptable depends on the game and its requirements. Any latency number should identify the path, measurement method, percentile, geography, and period; without that context, numbers are not directly comparable.

What else determines where and how a game is hosted?
| Decision factor | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Player-to-location latency | Measure from client devices to candidate locations using a protocol representative of game traffic, such as UDP for many game-server paths. |
| Match quality | Consider the connection experience for all players in a match, alongside the game’s other matchmaking rules. |
| Capacity and allocation | A favorable latency result is useful only if the location has server capacity. AWS warns that providing latency data for locations without fleets can lead to failed matchmaking requests. |
| Hosting architecture | Peer-to-peer and dedicated-server hosting have different scaling and security properties. The right approach depends on the game’s operational needs. |
| Compute needs and operating cost | Session complexity affects the resources to allocate. PlayFab meters virtual-machine time and network egress, so resource sizing is also an operational and cost decision. |
Microsoft’s PlayFab services can be combined or used independently, and dedicated servers are distinct from hosting on player devices. The architecture choice is not reducible to a ping result. Microsoft’s PlayFab Multiplayer Servers documentation.
A practical order for making the decision
- Measure from players. Collect client-side QoS measurements to the locations that could host the game. Use a measurement method suited to the traffic rather than assuming ICMP results represent UDP game traffic.
- Compare the actual player population. Evaluate how candidate locations perform for the people likely to play together; do not optimize solely for one player or rely on a regional median as a prediction for every player.
- Check capacity before allocation. Confirm that the candidate location can actually host a session. Latency information for a location without fleet capacity can contribute to failed matchmaking requests.
- Choose the hosting model. Decide whether peer hosting or dedicated servers better fits the game’s scaling and security needs.
- Size the session’s compute resources. Allocate resources for the workload the game requires, taking ongoing compute and network costs into account.
This is a practical synthesis of Microsoft and AWS guidance, not a universal allocation algorithm. Each game’s matchmaking rules, player distribution, and session workload can change the right balance.

How cloud game streaming changes the picture
With cloud game streaming, the player’s device connects to a remote game device or console as well as the game’s server path. The player-to-streaming-device connection can add delay even when the console-to-server connection is fast. A server-location measurement alone therefore does not describe the player’s total experience. Latency compensation can help, but it does not remove the need to account for the extra network segment. Microsoft discusses latency compensation in its multiplayer documentation.

Microsoft says it strives for inter-zone communication with round-trip latency of less than approximately 2 milliseconds. That is a target for network links between Azure availability zones, not a promise about every application flow or a player’s connection to a game. Observed latency can vary with protocol and network hops. See Microsoft’s Azure availability-zone documentation.
