The clearest published difference so far is a higher maximum CPU clock: Qualcomm says the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Oryon CPU can reach 5 GHz, while its Gen 5 brief lists two prime cores up to 4.74 GHz and six performance cores up to 3.62 GHz. That does not establish how much faster a Gen 6 phone will be. Qualcomm has announced Gen 6, but the available official information does not provide a complete comparable specification set, named retail phones, or independent Gen 6-versus-Gen 5 tests.
What has changed on paper?
Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 in September 2026, alongside the higher-tier Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, for next-generation premium smartphones. The Gen 6 product information identifies an Oryon CPU speed of up to 5 GHz. Qualcomm’s Gen 5 product brief lists two prime cores running up to 4.74 GHz and six performance cores up to 3.62 GHz.
These figures are not a like-for-like account of total CPU performance: the published Gen 6 information cited here gives a maximum speed, while the Gen 5 brief specifies speeds for both core groups. Qualcomm also notes an alternate 4.6 GHz Gen 5 version and says device CPU speed depends on the platform version; it advises readers to consult the phone maker’s specifications. A peak clock alone does not tell you how quickly a phone completes real tasks or sustains performance under load.

| Platform | What Qualcomm’s cited material establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 | Oryon CPU speed up to 5 GHz, according to Qualcomm’s Gen 6 product page. | A full core-by-core comparison, retail-phone clock limits, sustained performance, or measured uplift over Gen 5. |
| Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 | Two prime cores up to 4.74 GHz and six performance cores up to 3.62 GHz; an alternate 4.6 GHz version is also noted in Qualcomm’s Gen 5 product brief. | A universal clock speed for every phone using the platform; Qualcomm says to check OEM specifications. |
Does the 5 GHz figure mean Gen 6 is faster?
It indicates a higher stated maximum CPU clock than the Gen 5 prime-core figure, but it is not enough to quantify a real-world performance gain. Phone makers choose device configurations and operating limits, and performance can also depend on cooling, power settings, memory, software and workload. Qualcomm’s Gen 5 brief explicitly cautions that results vary by OEM implementation and other factors.

No controlled Gen 6-versus-Gen 5 benchmark or battery-life result is established by the available material. Treat claims about a specific percentage improvement, longer battery life or cooler operation as unverified until credible tests compare retail phones under stated conditions.
What about graphics, AI, cameras and connectivity?
The cited Gen 5 brief describes GPU, Hexagon NPU, imaging, video and connectivity features, but the available Gen 6 material does not provide a full, comparable feature-by-feature specification set. It therefore does not support claims that Gen 6 improves any of those areas over Gen 5.

Qualcomm’s Gen 5 brief, for example, advertises performance changes against the previous Snapdragon 8 Elite: 20% enhanced CPU performance, a 37% faster Hexagon NPU, 23% higher GPU performance and 20% lower GPU power consumption. Those are Qualcomm’s vendor-published Gen 5 claims against that earlier platform—not measurements of Gen 6 over Gen 5. The brief says results vary by OEM implementation and other factors.

For a useful future comparison, look for published specifications and tests covering sustained gaming frame rates and thermals, on-device AI workloads and power use, supported video formats, modem and Wi-Fi features, and the actual camera hardware and software in each phone. Platform capability does not by itself establish how a particular manufacturer implements it.

Which phones use these chips, and when can you buy them?
Qualcomm’s September 2026 announcement positions Gen 6 for next-generation premium smartphones, but the cited sources do not confirm named Gen 6 retail models, release dates or regional availability. The chip announcement alone is not evidence that a phone is available to buy.
Gen 5 illustrates why regional details matter. Qualcomm announced the platform on September 24, 2025. In a later example, it said Gen 5 for Galaxy would power the Galaxy S26 Ultra globally, and the Galaxy S26+ and S26 in select regions. That is a Gen 5 example, not an announcement of a Gen 6 handset; it shows why buyers should check the chipset listed for the exact model and market.
Should you buy a Gen 5 phone or wait for Gen 6?
Choose based on the finished phone rather than the generation label alone. If you are considering a Gen 5 handset now, compare its price, sustained performance, battery life, cameras, software support and regional chipset variant with the alternatives actually available to you. If you can wait, reassess once manufacturers announce Gen 6 phones and credible device-level tests are available.

- For performance: look for sustained, repeatable tests on retail devices, not just maximum CPU clocks.
- For battery life: compare independent tests using clearly described conditions; no Gen 6-versus-Gen 5 battery result is established here.
- For features: verify the exact phone’s GPU, AI, camera, video and connectivity specifications rather than assuming a platform-wide improvement.
- For availability: confirm the model, release timing and chipset variant in your country before making a purchase decision.
