Yes. A Nintendo 2DS plays compatible Nintendo 3DS games, but displays them in 2D. The exception is software marked exclusive to New Nintendo 3DS systems: the original 2DS cannot run those titles.
Can a 2DS play 3DS games?
Nintendo groups the 2DS with the 3DS family for game compatibility. Its official compatibility chart lists Nintendo 3DS software as usable on the original Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 2DS XL. The 2DS has no stereoscopic 3D display, so compatible games appear in 2D. Nintendo’s support article also says, “Nintendo 3DS Game Cards can only be played using a Nintendo 3DS family system.”

The New Nintendo 2DS XL is a different model from the original 2DS. Nintendo’s chart includes it among systems that support the New Nintendo 3DS-exclusive software category. If a game’s compatibility is unclear, check its packaging or Nintendo’s chart before buying.

A 2DS is not an older DS model: it belongs to the 3DS family. A Nintendo 3DS Game Card works on compatible 3DS-family systems, including 2DS models, but not on original DS or DSi systems. Nintendo’s support guidance identifies the 2DS and 3DS slot as accepting DS, DSi, and 3DS Game Cards.

The original Nintendo 2DS operations manual puts the compatibility plainly: “The Nintendo 2DS system can use Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS™, and Nintendo DSi™ Game Cards.” That does not mean every DS game feature works on a 2DS; certain accessories and functions have limitations.

DS and DSi games generally run on 3DS-family consoles, but Nintendo notes several limitations in its DS and DSi compatibility guidance:

- They display at a lower resolution than on a DS-family system. Hold START or SELECT while loading a game to display it at its original resolution.
- They do not display in 3D and cannot use the HOME Menu, StreetPass, or SpotPass while running.
- Games or features that require a DS accessory inserted into the Game Boy Advance slot are not usable on the listed 3DS-family systems. Some GBA cartridge-linked features are also restricted.
For unusual game features or accessories, consult the individual game manual and Nintendo’s compatibility information; card compatibility alone does not guarantee every accessory-based feature will work.
