There is no substantiated “tested” top 10 in the available evidence: several candidates’ current free plans, browser availability, or SVG-editing capabilities are not established. For a quick browser edit, SVG.Editor.Free and SVGForge describe client-side editors; for collaborative design, Figma exports SVG but has text and stroke caveats. If you need a proven, full-featured free vector editor rather than a browser tool, Inkscape is a strong desktop option—not an online editor.
This guide separates browser editors from design platforms and desktop software, and distinguishes vendor feature and privacy statements from independently verified results. Check current terms and try a representative file before relying on any editor for important work.
What counts as a free online SVG editor?
An SVG editor should let you work with vector objects—ideally including paths and nodes—and save the result as SVG. Some tools instead focus on arranging shapes, changing colors, or exporting designs that happen to be SVG. Those can suit simple tasks, but they are not interchangeable with a full vector editor.
“Online” here means an editor accessed in a browser. It does not include installed desktop applications, even when those applications are free. “Free” can mean an entirely free tool or a limited free tier; a product page alone may not establish which features or exports are included at no cost.

Browser-based options with documented details
The tools below are candidates, not a tested ranking. Features, privacy handling, and plan terms described by a product are vendor statements unless independently confirmed. Verify the current free tier and test your own file before committing to a workflow.
SVG.Editor.Free
The product page describes a browser editor with visual and code editing, layers, and gradients, with no account required. It lists export to SVG, optimized SVG, PNG, JPG, and WebP at 1× to 4×. The site says files are not uploaded to a server and projects autosave in browser local storage; these are vendor privacy claims, not an independent audit. See the SVG.Editor.Free product page for current terms.

SVGForge
SVGForge describes a browser editor with layers, an inspector, undo and redo, and zoom. Its product information is at SVGForge.
Online SVG Editor
Its about page presents the tool as free and requiring no signup. That description does not establish the editor’s current export choices, privacy practices, or feature limits, so check those in the editor itself before using a sensitive or production file. See Online SVG Editor’s about page.

Boxy SVG
Boxy SVG is an SVG-focused option whose documentation lists saving in SVG and SVGZ and exporting to PNG, JPG, WebP, PDF, and HTML5. A resource also mentions up to 10 GB of free cloud storage; that is a storage allowance, not proof that all editing features are free. Check current pricing and whether the browser experience you need is available at Boxy SVG’s English resource.
Figma
Figma is a broad design platform useful for interface and collaborative design work, not a specialist SVG editor. Its official export guide explains that SVG is an XML-based vector graphic and notes two important export behaviors: text exports as glyphs by default, so it is no longer editable as text in the SVG, and strokes export as fills. Those changes can matter when another person or application needs to edit the exported file. Consult Figma’s static-design export documentation.

Desktop alternative: Inkscape
If “online” is not a requirement, Inkscape is a free, open-source vector editor for GNU/Linux, Windows, and macOS. SVG is its main format, and its overview lists import and export support for formats including SVG, AI, EPS, PDF, PS, and PNG. It is a desktop benchmark for people who need a fuller vector-editing workflow; it is not a browser editor. Details are on the Inkscape overview.

- Make a quick change in a browser: start with a browser editor that explicitly supports editing the objects or paths you need, then export and reopen the SVG in another renderer.
- Work on collaborative layouts or interface designs: Figma may fit the design workflow, but inspect SVG text and strokes after export if editability matters.
- Keep work local: some browser tools claim client-side processing, but do not assume that every online editor behaves the same way. Review the specific tool’s privacy information and avoid uploading sensitive artwork unless its handling is acceptable.
- Need extensive vector editing: consider a desktop editor such as Inkscape rather than treating a lightweight browser utility as a full vector suite.
- Place a raster image: importing or placing an image does not make its pixels editable vector paths. The cited comparison warns that Photoshop rasterizes SVG and describes Canva’s SVG handling as limited; check the workflow carefully if vector editing is the goal. See GetSVG’s editor comparison.
How to check an editor before trusting an export
- Open a copy of an existing SVG. Confirm that the editor preserves the elements you need, including paths, text, and gradients.
- Edit a representative object. Try a path or node edit and a text change, rather than judging the tool only by whether it can recolor a shape.
- Save or export as SVG. Check whether the relevant SVG export is available on the free tier and whether an account is required.
- Reopen the exported file elsewhere. Inspect it in another browser or SVG-capable application. Look for shifted text, altered strokes, missing gradients, or changed layout.
- Check file handling. Read the product’s privacy terms and distinguish a vendor claim that processing is local from independently verified behavior.
Why this is not a tested top 10
A “tested” ranking requires comparable hands-on checks: opening the same SVG, editing paths and text, applying a gradient, exporting, checking the result in another renderer, and examining file handling. Those results are not established for these candidates. Other names sometimes included in roundups—such as Vectr, SVGEdit, GetSVG editor, CodeShack SVG editor, and VectoSolve editor—also lack enough verified current availability, free-plan terms, or feature evidence here to recommend as a ranked list. A shorter, qualified comparison is more useful than presenting ten tools as confirmed free browser editors.
