Stop. If someone unexpectedly told you to use a Bitcoin ATM to protect your money, fix an account problem, pay a fine, or resolve an investigation, it is a scam. Don’t withdraw or deposit cash, buy cryptocurrency, or scan the caller’s QR code. Hang up and check any real concern through a phone number, app, or website you already know is genuine.
Why a Bitcoin ATM payment demand is a scam
No legitimate government agency or business will tell you to use a Bitcoin ATM to protect your money or fix a problem, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says. There is no government Bitcoin account or digital wallet. The demand is a story designed to get your cash into cryptocurrency and send it to the scammer.
The caller or message may claim there is suspicious activity on your bank or investment account, an investigation, a package problem, a utility shutoff, or another urgent threat. They might pose as a bank, business, police department, government agency, or tech-support worker. A familiar name, caller ID, or knowledge of personal details does not prove the contact is genuine; caller ID can be faked. The FTC describes the Bitcoin ATM scam in its consumer alert.
Scammers may keep you on the phone, demand secrecy, direct you to withdraw cash, and coach you through buying cryptocurrency at an ATM. They may send a QR code to scan. That code can direct the cryptocurrency to a wallet controlled by the scammer; labels such as “safe account,” “government wallet,” or “secure deposit” do not make the transfer safe. See the FTC’s explanation of how scammers use Bitcoin ATMs.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
If the caller claims to be law enforcement, the FTC says: “Real law enforcement officers won’t call to insist that you pay fines by cash, gift card, cryptocurrency, payment app, or a wire transfer service — and never as a way to buy your way out of a ‘crime.’” The FTC issued that warning in June 2025.
What to do right now
- Stop the transaction. Don’t withdraw cash for the caller, insert cash into a Bitcoin ATM, buy cryptocurrency, or scan a QR code they supplied. Don’t let them rush or coach you.
- Hang up or stop replying. Don’t call the incoming number back or use a link or number from the message.
- Verify independently. If you are worried about a bank, investment account, business, utility, or police matter, find its contact details yourself through an official statement, app, website, or another source you already trust. The FTC’s Bitcoin ATM warning recommends checking through a known genuine contact route.
- Tell someone you trust before acting. A pause and a second opinion can help break the caller’s urgency and isolation tactics.
- Report the attempt. Use ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
If you already sent cryptocurrency at a Bitcoin ATM
Contact the Bitcoin ATM operator or the exchange involved immediately. Tell them the transaction was fraudulent and ask whether it can be reversed or refunded. Then report the scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Keep receipts, transaction details, wallet information, messages, and caller information so you can explain what happened.

Recovery is uncertain. The FTC says cryptocurrency payments do not have the same legal protections as credit and debit card payments and can be difficult to get back. Some state laws may help; the National Conference of State Legislatures provides state-specific cryptocurrency legislation information. The FTC’s scam recovery guidance explains what to do after a fraud.

How common are reported Bitcoin ATM scam losses?
FTC figures illustrate reported losses, not every incident or any one person’s likely outcome. In data the FTC released in 2024, consumers reported losing more than $110 million to Bitcoin ATM scams in 2023. For January through June 2024, reported losses exceeded $65 million, and the median reported loss was $10,000. During that six-month period, consumers over 60 were more than three times as likely as younger adults to report losing money to these scams. These figures come from the FTC’s September 2024 data release.
