A memory address space is the range of memory addresses available to a process or other execution context. On modern systems, this usually means a virtual address space: a logical view whose addresses are translated to physical memory by the operating system and processor. It describes where a program can address memory, not how much RAM it currently occupies.
What does memory address space mean?
Microsoft Learn defines a process’s virtual address space as “the set of virtual memory addresses that it can use.” In other words, it is the address range through which a process refers to code and data. The address space belongs to a defined execution context; it is not a single map of all installed memory.
In systems with virtual memory, a program uses virtual addresses. The processor’s memory-management hardware consults mappings maintained by the operating system to translate those addresses into physical locations. As a result, a program can work with a consistent logical layout without needing to know where its data sits in RAM.
Virtual addresses and physical addresses
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Virtual address | An address in a process’s logical memory view. It is translated before the system accesses physical memory. |
| Physical address | The hardware-facing location in physical memory reached after translation. |
| Page and page table | Memory is managed in pages. Page tables describe how virtual pages map to physical frames; page size depends on the system and architecture. |
Because mappings are per context, two processes can use the same numeric virtual address while that address maps to different physical pages in each process. This separation helps keep processes from inadvertently accessing one another’s memory. Systems can also set up shared mappings when processes are meant to use the same memory.

Address-space size is not RAM usage
The address-space range and the memory currently resident in RAM are different measures. A process may have a large virtual range without all of it occupying physical memory. In Windows terminology, the working set is the subset of a process’s virtual memory that is currently resident in physical memory. Pages and their backing can be managed over time, so a virtual address is not a promise that a particular physical location will remain assigned to it.

There is no one address-space size that applies to every computer or process. The usable range depends on the processor architecture, operating system, process type, and configuration. Address width alone does not tell you how much virtual space a particular process can use: an architecture may have a theoretical range larger than the portion implemented or exposed by its operating system.

| Documented example | What the figure applies to |
|---|---|
| 4 GB total virtual address range | Microsoft’s Windows memory-management documentation describes this range for 32-bit Windows. By default it is partitioned between process and system use; configuration, including 4GT, can change that split. See Microsoft Learn. |
| 128 TB user-mode virtual address range | Microsoft’s Windows driver documentation gives this as the range for a 64-bit process on 64-bit Windows. It is a Windows-specific documented limit, not a universal 64-bit process limit. See Microsoft Learn. |
These figures illustrate why address-space limits should always be tied to a platform and configuration. “64-bit” does not automatically mean a process can use the full theoretical 64-bit address range.

In Linux kernel documentation, a process address space is represented by an mm_struct and organized into Virtual Memory Areas (VMAs). Each VMA describes a virtually contiguous range with common attributes; tasks that share an address space share its mm_struct. This is a Linux implementation detail rather than a definition that applies to every operating system. See the kernel’s Process Addresses documentation.
Quick Recap
Common misconceptions
- “Address space” means the amount of RAM a process has. No. It is the range of addresses available to the execution context; the working set describes resident memory in Windows terminology.
- Every virtual address permanently maps to one unique physical location. No. The same numeric virtual address can map differently in different processes, and memory mappings or residency can change.
- Every process can use the full range suggested by its address width. No. Operating-system policy and implementation limit the usable portion.
