To fish in Graveyard Keeper 2, equip a rod in your hotbar, choose an available fishing spot, and cast with bait that the local fish accept—or cast without bait where fish bite naturally. Wait for the bite prompt, then reel while the fish rests and release while it fights. The species available depend on the water, bait, time of day, and remaining fish stock.
The detailed mechanics and fish figures below come from an unofficial database identifying build GraveyardKeeper2-4599483364566526977, not a developer-published fishing guide. Treat exact values as build-specific; prompts in your current game take precedence if an update changes the mechanic. The publisher announced the game was out on September 22, 2026: publisher announcement.
What you need to start fishing
- Put a fishing rod in the hotbar. A rod left in the backpack does not count.
- Have at least 1 Farming mastery. The database says the rod itself adds Farming mastery.
- Choose a fishing spot with fish remaining.
- Use bait accepted by a fish at that spot, or fish without bait where a species will bite without it.
Each cast consumes one bait immediately, even if you do not catch a fish.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGetting the first rod
The database lists the Basic Rod as a reward from the twins for six clay plates during the “Two Peas in a Pod” quest. It also reports a Basic Rod crafting recipe unlocked at Fishing I (15 green), with Flax Thread (45 green) required first. These are database-reported progression details and may change between builds.

How to catch and land a fish
Wait for the bite prompt
After casting, wait for the float to dip and the prompt to appear. The database reports a 1–8 second wait, depending on the fish, followed by a 0.7–2 second response window. Pressing before the bite scares the fish away. Follow the prompt shown in your current build.
Manage the rest-and-fight rhythm
- Reel during a rest. Hold the prompted control while the fish is resting to bring it closer.
- Release when it fights. Reeling during a fight rapidly raises line tension. The database says the line can break in about a second; if your Farming mastery is below the fish’s Fight value, reeling during a fight can also pull the fish away.
- Resume reeling when it rests. Releasing reduces tension quickly, but the fish gains some distance.
- Keep alternating until the fish reaches you. It escapes if it reaches the far end or the line breaks.
Higher Farming mastery increases reeling speed during rests. The Fisherman talent reduces a fish’s Fight value by 1–6, depending on the fish. As one database example, a Basic Rod and Roach with Farming mastery M=1 and rod bonus R=1 approaches at 24 units per second while resting—about four seconds of reeling—and tension rises by about 102 per second if you reel through a fight. These are source-reported example values, not a universal guarantee.

How bait and fishing progression work

In the tables, day and night percentages are chances for a fully stocked spot using the stated bait; stock is the starting count at that spot. Fight is the listed resistance before the Fisherman talent reduction shown in parentheses. “Under 1%” is reported as such by the database.

Why a fish may stop biting
Fish stock at a spot is finite at a given time. A catch removes that fish until it returns, up to the spot’s listed starting stock. Because the percentages describe a fully stocked location, your actual chances can differ after catches have reduced the stock.
