If a wired controller feels delayed on Windows 11, test the connection, compare the problem across games and controllers, then check the display and game settings. A wired connection alone doesn’t identify where the delay occurs: it may involve the controller, USB path, game, or display pipeline. Work through the checks below one at a time so you can tell what actually helps.
First, narrow down where the delay occurs
Before changing settings, identify the scope and pattern of the problem. This helps distinguish a controller or connection issue from a game-specific or display-related one.
- One game or every game? If only one game feels delayed, start with that game’s settings and official support. If several games are affected, compare the controller and connection across them.
- One controller or more than one? If another compatible controller is available, test it under the same conditions. A difference points toward the original controller or its connection, though it does not identify the precise fault by itself.
- Steady delay or intermittent dropouts? A consistent response delay and occasional disconnections are different symptoms. Note which you experience before troubleshooting.
- Do other input devices also feel delayed? If they do, investigate the game and display path as well as the controller.
Check the wired USB connection
Reseat the connector, inspect the cable and controller port for visible damage or looseness, and connect the controller directly to the PC. For diagnosis, bypass any USB hub or dock and try another suitable USB port. Microsoft’s general USB-C troubleshooting guidance recommends checking connection, compatibility, and direct-connection issues; it is not a controller-specific latency guide.
If possible, compare with a known-good compatible cable or controller. Treat this as an isolation test, not a guaranteed latency fix: replacing a functioning cable has not been established as a universal way to reduce input lag. Consider replacement hardware only if the comparison or inspection suggests damage, instability, or incompatibility.

Check the monitor refresh rate and game display mode
Windows 11 lets you inspect the selected refresh rate at Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Choose a rate supported by your monitor. Microsoft says a higher refresh rate can improve responsiveness and reduce input lag, but the benefit depends on the display and the game. Variable refresh rate (VRR) can also affect whether changing the rate manually is useful, and Windows 11 includes Dynamic Refresh Rate. See Microsoft’s guide to changing a monitor’s refresh rate.
Make a note of the game’s display mode—windowed, borderless, or another mode—because some Windows graphics options apply only to particular modes. Don’t assume that a refresh-rate change or display option will fix a controller-specific problem.

Test Optimizations for windowed games when supported
Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games is a display-pipeline option, not a controller polling-rate setting. Microsoft says it supports DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless mode, transitions supported games to flip-model presentation, and can reduce frame latency. It does not establish a benefit for every game or for exclusive full-screen modes.

- Restart the game before testing.

Make controlled comparisons
Change only one thing at a time: a USB port, controller, refresh rate, or supported graphics option. Retest the same game and scene, and return to the previous setting if there is no improvement. If you change several variables together, you won’t know which one affected the result.
Keep track of whether the change affects all games or only one, and whether it changes steady delay or intermittent interruptions. If only one game remains affected, check that game’s official support and settings. For controller firmware, use the current official instructions for your exact model; Xbox support pages surfaced for this topic did not provide verifiable step-by-step instructions here, so don’t apply generic firmware steps to an unidentified controller.

Settings and fixes to treat cautiously
There is no universal Windows 11 controller-lag setting established by the sources cited here. In particular, don’t treat disabling USB selective suspend or editing the registry as proven controller-lag fixes: Microsoft’s selective-suspend article concerns Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2, not Windows 11. Likewise, a new controller, cable, driver utility, or graphics change is not a guaranteed remedy. Use the comparisons above to identify evidence of a specific fault before replacing hardware or making broader system changes.
