Connect your modem or ISP handoff to the router’s WAN or Internet port. Connect computers, switches, and other wired devices to a LAN port. If a port is labeled WAN/LAN or supports multiple speeds, check your router’s manual and settings first: its role may be configurable, and its default can vary by model.

WAN or LAN: which port should the modem use?

The WAN port is the router’s connection to the outside network: it receives the internet connection from a modem or an ISP-provided Ethernet handoff. LAN ports connect devices inside your home or office network, such as a computer, printer, game console, or network switch. TP-Link’s Archer GX90 user guide identifies these port roles in its hardware connection section.

Look for a label such as WAN or Internet on the router itself. Do not rely on port color alone; consult the exact model’s manual if the labels are unclear. Use a LAN port for a local wired device. A switch connected to a LAN port can provide additional wired connections, but it does not change which router port receives the internet connection.

What if the router has a WAN/LAN or multi-gig port?

Some routers have a port that can serve as either WAN or LAN, or let you choose a higher-speed port for WAN use. The port may need to be assigned in the router’s software before it will work as the internet input. Defaults are model-specific: TP-Link’s 2023 Omada ER707-M2 installation guide says of its 2.5G WAN/LAN port, “By default, it is a LAN port connecting to local PCs or switches.” That applies to that device, not to all routers. Follow the setup instructions for your exact model. For supported ASUS routers, the WAN port can be selected during setup or changed later in the interface; NETGEAR documents a WAN Preference menu for certain Nighthawk models. These options and menu names are not universal.

  • ASUS: follow its instructions for setting a 2.5G or 10G port as WAN.
  • NETGEAR: check its guide for configuring a Nighthawk multi-gig port for an internet connection; it applies to listed models.

How fast should the WAN port be?

Choose a WAN port that can support the speed of both your internet service and the modem or source port feeding the router. The connection is limited by every component in the path: the service tier, modem or ISP handoff, router WAN port, Ethernet cable, and receiving device. A faster router port does not increase a slower service’s speed.

Connection example Maximum indicated by ASUS guidance
1 Gbps service connected to a 2.5G WAN port Up to 1 Gbps
300 Mbps service connected to a 2.5G WAN port Up to 300 Mbps
2.5 Gbps service using a compatible 2.5G path Up to 2.5 Gbps

These are ASUS examples illustrating the effect of the slowest link, not independent speed-test results. See its wired connection speed and cable guidance. Confirm the speed supported by your modem or source port and router before choosing among multiple WAN options; if the equipment’s capability is unclear, check its documentation or ask your ISP.

Which Ethernet cable should you use?

Cable category is one part of the link, not a way to exceed the service or port limits. ASUS recommends Cat 5e or better for connections above 100 Mbps and Cat 6 or above for its 10G setup guidance. NETGEAR says its supported multi-gig ports can use Cat 5e or Cat 6. These are vendor recommendations for the stated contexts; the result still depends on the equipment and connection.

If a link negotiates at a lower rate than expected, try a known-good cable. Replacing a cable will not make a 1G port, slower modem, or lower-speed service operate at 2.5G or 10G. See NETGEAR’s explanation of multi-gig Ethernet ports for its supported-port context.

How to choose and connect the right port

  1. Identify the ports. Read the router’s labels and model manual to find WAN/Internet and LAN. For a combined WAN/LAN port, confirm both its default role and any required setting.
  2. Check the source and service speeds. Find the modem or ISP handoff’s port speed and the speed tier on your internet plan. Ask your ISP or consult the equipment documentation if needed.
  3. Select the WAN port. If the router offers multiple WAN choices, use one supported by the source equipment and plan. Assign a configurable port as WAN in the router interface before connecting or relying on it.
  4. Connect local devices. Connect computers and switches to LAN ports.
  5. Check the link rates. If available, use the router’s status page to inspect the WAN rate and the LAN rate to the affected device. ASUS documents where to check wired connection speed in its router status guidance.

What to check if the connection is slow or offline

  1. Confirm the modem or ISP handoff is connected to the selected WAN/Internet port, not a LAN port. If it is a configurable port, verify that the router has assigned it as WAN.
  2. Check the router’s displayed WAN link rate, then check the LAN rate to the device having trouble, if those details are available.
  3. Compare the observed rate with the service tier, source port, router port, cable, and client network adapter. Any one of these can limit the connection.
  4. Try a known-good cable or another device or connection to isolate the problem. If the source connection itself does not reach the expected service speed, contact your ISP.

For ASUS-specific checks of port and adapter specifications, plus cable cross-testing, consult its wired connection speed and cable troubleshooting guidance.
