Fralculator is a desktop calculator built around a different promise from a typical calculator: it shows how an expression is evaluated, with numbered math steps and plain-English explanations. Its author describes it as an Electron, React, Vite, and TypeScript project for Windows and Linux, with offline-oriented operation and additional tools for graphing, conversions, history, voice input, and security references.

How Fralculator shows its work

Fralculator’s author describes the calculation engine as a tokenizer, recursive-descent parser, and evaluator. As the evaluator reduces an expression, it records a trace of the steps. That trace is then used for both the mathematical display and a natural-language explanation, rather than treating the explanation as a separate calculation.

For example, the project write-up uses 3 × (4 + 5): the displayed order is first 4 + 5 = 9, then 3 × 9 = 27. The author also specifies that -3^2 is interpreted as -(3^2), so exponentiation takes precedence over unary minus. These are descriptions of the intended implementation and behavior, not independently tested results.

What the app includes

  • Expression entry: Typed expressions and natural-language input, including shorthand correction with visible descriptions of changes.
  • Worked explanations: A step-by-step math trace accompanied by plain-English explanations.
  • Additional calculator tools: Function graphing, unit conversion, currency conversion, and searchable calculation history.
  • Voice input: Whisper-tiny in a WebAssembly build running in a worker.
  • EHCalc: A cybersecurity reference toolkit with subnet calculations, hashes, encoders, password utilities, and port lookup.

Offline behavior and voice input

The author describes Fralculator as offline by default, with two network exceptions: an optional currency-rate fetch and an approximately 40 MB one-time download of the voice model. According to the project write-up, the model is cached in IndexedDB; after it has been acquired, audio is passed to a worker and audio bytes do not leave the machine. These are the author’s descriptions of the design, not findings from an independent network audit.

The project write-up does not specify supported speech languages, minimum hardware requirements, or voice-recognition accuracy. If voice input matters to your use case, those details should not be assumed from the fact that the model runs locally after download.

EHCalc’s security-reference tools

EHCalc is described as a set of practical reference utilities rather than a substitute for specialist security review. Its listed functions include:

Canon P23-DHV-3 Printing Calculator with Double Check Function, Tax Calculation, Currency Conversion, White
  • Check your calculations thanks to the calculator's inbuilt serial impact roller printer that enables you to monitor your inputs and retains ongoing records. This two-color printer with a four-key memory prints red and black ink at up to 2.3 lines per second onto the included roll of paper.
  • Printing calculator offers 12-digit LCD display for convenient viewing. 4-key memory keeps often-used figures accessible for faster calculations. Clock and calendar functions help maintain schedules.
  • Easy-to-use solution for all of your basic math needs. Streamline financial calculations with currency conversion, tax calculation, and item counter functions. 1-year manufacturer limited warranty.
  • Dimensions: 2.2"H x 6.4"W x 9.1"D. Package content: AC adapter, paper roll, user manual.
  • Powered by any standard AC outlet, eliminating the need for expensive batteries. Decimal switch, rounding switch, percent, sign change, backspace, double zero, and grand total functions help you solve a variety of mathematical problems.
  • CIDR and subnet-mask calculations, including network and broadcast addresses, wildcard masks, usable hosts, address ranges, and class.
  • MD5 and SHA-family hashing, plus ten encoders.
  • Password-strength estimates and password generation.
  • Port lookup with risk notes.

The author says password generation uses crypto.getRandomValues() with rejection sampling and that generated passwords are not written to storage. These feature claims are not an independent security audit; do not treat EHCalc as an endorsement or validated tool for security-critical decisions.

What “offline-first” does—and does not—mean here

Offline-first is a useful description of the project’s stated design, but it does not mean every feature is available without a network connection from first launch. The author identifies currency-rate retrieval as optional and says voice requires an initial model download. The write-up does not establish that the app has been independently audited for network activity, nor does it document automatic updates.

Electron’s publishing and updating documentation explains how Electron applications can publish releases and integrate update checks. That general capability does not show that Fralculator currently checks for or installs updates.

Platforms, installers, and installation caveats

In an October 1, 2026 project write-up, the author reported five installer formats: NSIS and portable .exe packages for Windows, plus AppImage, .deb, and .rpm packages for Linux. The author says the Windows binaries are unsigned and may trigger a Windows SmartScreen warning, and recommends AppImage as a starting option on Linux.

What Fralculator is not yet

Fralculator’s current explanations are described as rule-based. The author mentions a possible local LLM backend—such as a small GGUF model running through WASM or ONNX—as future work to expand explanations and natural-language capabilities. It does not exist in the described current version, so Fralculator should not be characterized as an AI- or LLM-powered calculator on that basis.

Who may find it useful

Fralculator’s strongest fit is someone who wants to inspect the order of operations and see a readable explanation alongside a result, rather than relying on a number alone. Its broader toolset may also appeal to users who want graphing, conversions, history, voice entry, and basic security-reference utilities in one desktop app.

The project is described as an Electron application for Windows and Linux. Its author’s feature and privacy statements have not been independently verified, and the available project write-up provides no measured performance, accuracy, or user-adoption figures. Treat the app as a project to evaluate for your own needs, rather than as a validated alternative for high-stakes calculations or security decisions.
