The “colourful antibiotics” are red and blue 1,4-benzoquinone compounds associated with venom from the Mexican scorpion Diplocentrus melici. In laboratory studies, they showed activity against several bacteria, including drug-resistant strains. They are experimental research leads—not colourful medicines, approved antibiotics, or established treatments for people.
What are the red and blue compounds?
They are small molecules in the 1,4-benzoquinone chemical family, distinct from the peptides more commonly associated with scorpion venom. In the 2019 study, researchers described freshly extracted venom as a white, viscous liquid that changed colour after exposure to air. They purified red and blue fractions and identified the compounds using analytical chemistry. Because the venom yielded only tiny amounts, the researchers also synthesized material in the laboratory for structural analysis and biological testing. The 2019 study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reports the findings.
The colours describe compounds obtained through processing and analysis; they do not mean the venom itself is a ready-to-use coloured drug. Nor does the finding imply that scorpion venom should be collected or used as a remedy.
What bacteria did the compounds affect?
Red benzoquinone: Staphylococcus aureus
The 2019 study reported laboratory activity against S. aureus, a bacterium that can cause infections. It reported a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 4 µg/mL for the red compound. An MIC is the lowest concentration that prevents visible bacterial growth under the study’s test conditions; it is not a dose for treating an infection.

Blue benzoquinone: tuberculosis bacteria
The same study reported a 4 µg/mL MIC for the blue compound against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, including a multidrug-resistant strain. It also reported activity in a mouse tuberculosis infection model. That animal result is preclinical evidence; it does not demonstrate that the compound is safe or effective in people.
Blue benzoquinone: drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii
A 2025 follow-up reported bactericidal activity against multidrug-resistant clinical isolates of A. baumannii, including isolates resistant to carbapenems and colistin. Bactericidal activity means the compound killed bacteria in the reported experiments, rather than only stopping their growth. The study tested the blue benzoquinone in laboratory conditions, not as a treatment in patients. See the 2025 paper in The Journal of Antibiotics.

What does the resistance experiment show?
In a sequential-culture experiment, researchers exposed a reference strain of A. baumannii to sub-inhibitory concentrations of the blue compound for 35 days and reported no observed resistance development during that experiment. This is an encouraging laboratory observation, but it applies to the tested strain and setup. It does not show that resistance cannot develop in other bacteria, under different conditions, or during clinical use.
What are the main limitations?
Activity changed in protein-containing medium
The 2025 study found that protein-containing culture medium reduced the compound’s antibacterial activity. The authors suggested that binding to proteins could affect bioavailability—the amount of compound available to act on bacteria. This matters because activity in a laboratory assay does not necessarily translate to activity in the body.

Safety and mechanism remain unresolved
The 2019 paper reported cytotoxic effects in neoplastic cell lines and human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. These findings mean antibacterial activity should not be treated as proof of selectivity or safety. The 2025 researchers said the compound’s mechanism still required determination and described further characterization for possible clinical application. The available findings do not establish a safe human dose, efficacy in people, or an approved treatment.

The studies identify a possible starting point for antibiotic development, not a medicine ready for a prescription or pharmacy shelf. The 2019 work combined bacterial testing with a mouse infection model; the 2025 follow-up expanded laboratory testing to resistant A. baumannii isolates and examined resistance emergence in one reference strain. Further development would need to address activity in biologically relevant conditions, safety, mechanism, and whether treatment benefits patients.

Other scorpion-venom antimicrobial research concerns different substances. Scorpine and vejovine, for example, are peptides from other scorpion species, not the red and blue benzoquinones discussed here. Their findings should not be treated as evidence about these compounds or as proof that scorpion venom generally provides safe antibiotics.
