UV light can reveal a hidden message on specially modified paper because the paper’s cellulose fibres carry light-responsive coumarin molecules. Ultraviolet exposure writes a fluorescent pattern into the material; a shorter-wavelength UV exposure reverses the chemistry and erases it. The paper looks like ordinary paper in visible light, according to the reported experiment.
What makes the message appear?
The paper is not ordinary paper that becomes secret-message paper simply by shining a lamp on it. Researchers chemically attached coumarin molecules to cellulose fibres, creating a material whose optical properties can be changed with ultraviolet light.
In the reported writing step, UV light at 340 nm drives a reversible chemical reaction called a [2+2]-cycloaddition. It joins coumarin molecules into cyclobutane dimers. The resulting pattern is not visible under ordinary visible light, but it fluoresces when viewed under UV illumination.
How is the message written and erased?
Writing the pattern
A stencil is used to form contrasting areas on the modified paper. Where the writing exposure produces the coumarin dimers, the material fluoresces under UV; the difference between those areas and the surrounding paper encodes the message. The reported writing wavelength is 340 nm.

Reading the message
Illuminate the material with a UV lamp to make the fluorescent pattern visible. The report does not specify a consumer lamp model or a reading wavelength, so it does not establish that any particular retail lamp will reproduce the experiment.
Erasing the pattern
Exposure to shorter-wavelength UV reverses the dimerization and erases the encoded pattern, leaving the paper available for reuse. The report does not give a specific erasing wavelength; 340 nm is the stated writing condition, not a wavelength to assume for reading or erasing.

How does it compare with ordinary visible markings?
The reported material was visually inconspicuous in visible light, and its message could not be washed away with solvents. These findings apply to this modified paper and should not be generalized to all security papers or invisible inks.

Is this a commercial security-paper product?
No commercial deployment or retail version is established by the cited accounts. The researchers proposed anti-counterfeiting and tracking as potential applications, but those are prospective uses rather than evidence that the paper is in routine use. The research was reported by Chemistry World in 2016; the underlying paper, by M. d’Halluin, J. Rull-Barrull, E. Le Grognec, D. Jacquemin and F.-X. Felpin, appeared in Chemical Communications in 2016.
